The "Emergent" Solo Art exhibition by Hefrani Barnes is open for a few more days this week.
Background of Emergent:
The exhibition takes its title ‘emergent’ from the Latin word ‘emergere’ – meaning to bring forth, to bring to the light in the process of coming into being. In her first solo exhibition the artist reflects on her own personal journey of coming into being as a young artist. An emerging artist. Her works explores the knowledge production systems behind contemporary societal, ecological, climate crises and health issues faced by young pacific islanders. The war that takes place in bodies especially her own with epilepsy, against nature and increasing between nations and peoples, its remnant’s washing up on our shores is reproduced into (20) art pieces.
Playing with the ideas of ‘bring forth to light’ what is submerged or hidden or what is hidden in plain sight. Juxtaposing everyday material such as black sand from Wailoaloa beach in Nadi, coconut husk and bark and material of cultural value such as tapa and the beloved kuta and ‘apei mat to enhance the play between what is common and what is of value and challenges the audience to think about what should be of common value to all – justice, hope, love and a duty of care for the living and non-living.
It invites the audience to journey deep into oneself.
This exhibition was made possible with funding support from Pacific Island Feminists Alliance for Climate Justice (PIFa4CJ) in partnership with The University of Fiji.
Featured in this post is one of the artworks, To Hell with Drowning series.
Medium: Digital Art.
Price: $700
