One Laptop per Child (OLPC) is a global non-profit organization whose mission is to create educational opportunities for the world’s poorest children by providing each and every one with rugged, low-cost, low-powered connected laptop, loaded with open source content and software designed to foster collaborative, self-empowered learning. Developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s renowned Media Lab, OLPC is the creator, manufacturer and distributor of the XO laptop. Since its launch in 2006 at the World Economic Forum by then-UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the XO has been distributed to over 2.4 million children and is in use in 31 countries. In 2007 the Ministers of Education of the Pacific Islands Forum met to discuss enhancing educational outcomes for Pacific children. The Ministers endorsed the use of OLPC initiative in schools to assist in developing ICT in schools, alongside appropriate educational input and trained personnel.
