Suomen vesihuolto on suuren uudistustarpeen edessä, ja ilmastonmuutos tuo vedenjakeluun uusia haasteita. Huomenta Suomessa keskustellaan huomenna siitä, miten vesihuollon infra kestää tulevaisuuden paineet ja millaisia ratkaisuja tarvitaan.

The WE3 Seminar Series has begun!

Each session brings together our unit's researchers and experts to share their thoughts and insights on their current work and research. In these seminar sessions, we strive to spark discussion and inspire collaboration within our unit.

In our first seminar series session, University teacher Jaakko Nissilä gave a presentation about "Wastewater Management Data for Impact Assessment in Finland," and Postdoctoral researcher Xiao Lu presented "The mystery of time dynamics – Water table and porewater temperature variation after 10 years of peatland restoration."💡

We look forward to sharing more highlights from the series as it continues!

During the last weeks of September, 50 wastewater samples were collected from influents and effluents of 25 wastewater treatment plants in Finland and brought to the University of Oulu laboratories for analysis. 🔎

The activities linked to sample collection, analysis, and assessment are part of the ArcticSewlutions project, led by Associate Professor Pekka Rossi, and the SanMic project, led by Senior Research Fellow Elisangela Heiderscheidt.

Several researchers from Rossi's research group have worked on the analysis: Doctoral researcher Javad Shafiee Neyestanak, Doctoral researcher Robel Sahilu Bekele, & Postdoctoral researcher Jacqueline Malazarte.

The CIRCNETS project has been selected to receive the Interreg NPA Award in the category Achieving Synergies!

The Interreg NPA Award was handed to the CIRCNETS project, to Project Manager Niko Hänninen, during the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme’s 25th Anniversary Conference, held in Bodø, Norway, on 1–2 October 2025.

The Interreg NPA Awards are designed to recognise and celebrate the achievements of projects that exemplify the values and impact of transnational cooperation in the Northern Periphery and Arctic.

The CIRCNETS project is led by a Postdoctoral researcher, Jenni Ylä-Mella, along with Project Manager Niko Hänninen at the Oulun yliopisto - University of Oulu

The Most Valuable Clock in the World will be created in Oulu, and Associate Professor Pertti Ala-aho and his research group, Snow Hydrology and Modeling, will be part of it! ❄️

Today, Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen came to the Oulun yliopisto - University of Oulu Linnamaa campus to interview Ala-aho for the Most Valuable Clock.

Pohjaveden nosto hillitsisi turvepeltojen kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä – Uuden tutkimuksen mukaan peltojen vettämiseen tarvitaan 20-kertainen valuma-alue Vettä on ohjattava turvepellolle jopa 20 kertaa peltoa suuremmalta alueelta, jotta saavutetaan riittävä kosteus kasvihuonekaasupäästöjen hillitsemiseksi. Tämä selviää Oulun yliopiston ja Luonnonvarakeskuksen uudesta tutkimuksesta, jossa selvitettiin turvepeltojen vesienhallinnan nykytilaa.

Käytettyjen kalastusvälineiden erilliskeräys on alkanut Oulun seudulla🎣🪢

WE3 tutkimusyksikön projektipäällikkö Niko Hänninen kertoo uutisessa mitä kalastusvälineiden keräys mahdollistaa ja miten alan harrastajat hyötyvät keräyksestä.

Hänninen toimii projektipäällikkönä tutkijatohtori Jenni Ylä-Mella johtamassa Blue Circular Nets (CIRCNETS) hankkeessa. CIRCNETS tukee kalastusverkkojen keräystä, käsittelyä ja kierrätystä, jotta nämä verkot poistettaisiin käytöstä ja kierrätettäisiin asianmukaisesti, kun niiden "parasta ennen" -päivä lähestyy.
