Introducing our sponsored student-athletes for the upcoming season!
Each year, Xamk sponsors a few students who compete with ambition and determination at least at the Finnish Championship (SM) level. Throughout the year, our sponsored athletes will share their experiences of balancing studies and sports through Xamk’s channels.
This year, we are sponsoring ice hockey player Janina Saari, who is studying Food Processing Engineering in Kouvola; powerlifter Jenna Laitinen, who is studying to become a Bachelor of Social Services; and para-athlete Jesse Rakkolainen, who is pursuing a Master’s Degree Programme in Sales and Project Management.
We wish them all the best in their training and competitions! Soon, we’ll hear more about the everyday life of a student-athlete in their own words.
Xamk is also participating in the Finnish Olympic Committee’s Athlete-Friendly Higher Education Institution audit. The quality framework aims to support flexible and individualized study arrangements, helping student-athletes successfully combine their academic and sporting careers.

Sonja Turunen is in her fourth year of studies in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design. This summer, she is working as a Design Trainee at Xamk’s Creative Industries Research Unit.
“I applied for a design-related position because, through my work, I realised that there is significant potential for development in materials. Unfortunately, product development has played only a small role in our studies. When I saw the advertisement for this position, I knew immediately that it was exactly what I had been looking for. It also gives me the opportunity to deepen my expertise and understanding of the use of biomaterials, which is an important topic for me, while contributing to the development of methods for adapting them to modern manufacturing technologies.”
Sonja works primarily in the Biodesign development and learning environment. Her responsibilities include designing and modelling experimental structures, conducting material experiments, and collaborating with robotics trainees and companies in the Kymenlaakso region.
Her tasks are linked to the BioTechDemoDesign – Sustainable Technology and Bio-based Innovations project and the Experimental Environments for Climate-Responsible Outdoor Structures project, both of which are co-funded by the European Union.
Sonja has also had the opportunity to participate in the functional development of a new robot, which has helped her further develop her own modelling skills and adapt them to the requirements of biomaterials.
According to Sonja, the best part of the job has been “the broad collaboration with innovative people and the opportunity to learn more about the use of biomaterials.”
