Why I cry

The scream, when it came, was not heard, it would seem.
Neither, it would seem, was the bedlam that the mayhem,
that the task of breaking down the door, would have taken them.
The door that was supposed to provide for her and her three sons some security,
from the insecurity that lives outside that door.
It is possible that there might have been more,
that might have been covered by the dark of the night,
it was, however, three, when the door was broken that came in.

Armed with them, as they came in through the broken door,
was the threat, that violence could be imposed on another,
which is present, when a person points a gun at the other.
Each had one, which in moments were pointed at her.
This, even if she did not, gave them the permit that was needed,
the licence, to do and take, as they wanted.
And that was what they did, to her meagre savings,
as well as the other things that caught their interest.

She had thought the nightmare that night was over,
after they had taken her money and valuables.
It, however, was after that, she yelled out her first scream.
They, apparently, had wanted more than they had already taken.
They had wanted to, impose themselves on her, yet again,
to which, when she said no, they stabbed her,
first with the butt of a knife, to open her closed legs,
and then each, taking turns, with themselves in through the open legs.

In trying to understand what happened that night to her,
what might have provoked these men to do what they did to her,
I wonder. How could a person violently violate another?
They too, like her three sons, all have a mother.
So, how could these sons, do what they did to this mother?
Could they not see the pain that it would bring,
if someone else did what they were doing,
to their mother or someone else they knew?

Now, her days today, are filled with pain.
And no matter how much she tries to run,
the pain, like a shadow, when there is light, follows her.
When she sits, it sits on her.
When she empties her bladder, it goes nowhere.
And when the night, with its darkness, comes,
it brings with it fear, with the question to whether,
what happened that night might yet visit her.

I heard that a few days after the attack of the night
a man was arrested, and then accused,
of being involved in the attack of that night.
With certainty not even bothered with,
with the accusations not heard by an appointed judge nor a jury,
the man, whoever he was, was found guilty.
A verdict, that was passed by the public,
who then proceeded to execute him publicly.

As I cry for her, I cannot help but also cry for him.
For even if he was guilty as they claim,
can it ever be possible to avenge a victim,
without, when you do so, creating a victim?
It cannot be certain, that the security that maybe was sought,
from the response from the public, nor the possible intent
of the men that night, can be gotten, as we probably would have had it,
since both methods have, for a while, been tried.

Many, when asked, would make the claim
that there is a need for change, though this never comes.
How can they wait for change to come, when at the same time,
the same people limit the benefits that come
from their actions to just a few, whom they like, or think are like them.
It just maybe that this is why it is always out of reach, always far away,
for it is conceivable that for as long as we think, of just ourselves,
we, through the others we ignore, bring harm to ourselves?
