How to play disco accompaniment pattern in circle of fifths? Listen to these music education students in Karlsruhe Music University. The pattern and chord progression is from the book Keyboard Accompaniment and Improvisation.
This is the ending of the great improvisation for I IV V7-cadence in C major and A minor. The left hand is leading the modulation after each 8 bars, so the melody players have to react to the sudden key change. This is an easy exercise to start with! What can you get out of the basic cadence I IV V7 and I? A lot of fun, interesting storytellings, and great communication between the musicians at HfM Karlsruhe in our Keyboard Accompaniment and Improvisation workshop! The task for three players was: one is playing a waltz accompaniment (see the book) with a bass fill leading either back to C major or to modulate to A minor. The other two players are communicating with questions and answers - simple as that. it is important to listen and react to what you hear. Only in that way the music is live and we here the conversation!

We practiced how to create improvisations together: starting points, chord progressions, rhythmic patterns, orchestral effects, interaction, and soon. The great students of Schulmusik in Hochschule für Musik Karslruhe were learning a lot in this workshop with the book Keyboard Accompaniment and Improvisation (Liedbegleitung und Klavierimprovisationin Deutsch; other editions available in French, Polish, Chinese and of course in the original language in Finnish!). 😄

With the same I-IV-V7-chords you could also create a polka-type accompaniment with alternating bass. The melody is created by question-answer -interaction. Join the fun!

Lot of crazy things happen when we start to improvise together in our workshop! Remember: the first idea is usually the best. Don’t try to be original!
Keyboard Accompaniment and Improvisation workshop in Frankfurt, Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst: we did quite a few improvisation exercises with the piano and without. in this exercise we use the I-IV-V7- chords from major and minor. Almost the same scale goes with both keys. Try yourself!

Keyboard Accompaniment and Improvisation Tour Germany 2026 is here! On Friday we improvised and learned new accompaniment patterns with talented Schulmusiker from Hochschul für Musik in Karlsruhe. So much Fun with just a few white or black keys, circle of fifths, questions and answers.. all exercises from the book Keyboard Accompaniment and Improvisation (Liedbegleitung und Klavierimprovisation in Deutsch). Last Christmas - easy but catchy rhythm pattern for piano. No melody in RH which makes it easier to play, on ly intro has instrumental melody. The whole song goes throughout with the same 8 bar pattern! This is a killer for piano students.. ;)
