Today, the great Thelonious Monk would have turned 105 years old.

I only played with Mr. Monk one time. I filled in for his ailing bass player for a week of gigs in Philadelphia. Mr. Monk, the Countess, and I drove from NY to Philadelphia and back again every night. I was still in school and showed up at my 9AM class. Mr. Monk asked me to play more with him, but when he heard I was a student, he said I should finish my studies.

Sadly, we never played together after that, but I always cherish those memories.

Happy heavenly birthday, Mr. Monk.

We are happy to take part at the legacy and support the collagues to spread hope and strenghts on all our talents students who are able to find in us the bases to their success

Happy 89th Birthday to Institute Trustee Wayne Shorter! We thank you for sharing your incredible music with us all these years, and for your continuous dedication to teaching and inspiring the next generation of musicians.

The pandemic has not stopped Shorter from sharing his immense insights with the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Class of 2023, including during this virtual residency last fall (shown above). He told the students to be “imaginative while soloing,” and to “create as much as possible within nothing.” Truly the words of a master musician!
