Hei kaikki! 👋 Today, we're diving into one of the intriguing aspects of Finnish phonology: Consonant Gradation, also known as KPT-vaihtelu part 1 🇫🇮!
Consonant gradation in Finnish, is a phonological phenomenon that affects certain consonants in word stems. This change typically occurs between the basic form (nominative case) of a word and its inflected or derivative forms. In other words, if you're putting a word into a new form, most likely, there will be a substitution, meaning an alternation of consonants. The name "KPT" refers to the Finnish consonants 'k', 'p', and 't', which are most commonly involved in these alternations. Let's demystify and celebrate the unique rhythm of Finnish together! 🎉📖
Swipe right through the carousel to discover examples and insights about the KPT system.
Consonants can have a strong grade and a weak grade. Here is a full list of changes:
Strong → weak
kk → k
pp → p
tt → t
t → d
k → Ø
p → v
Post with Part 2 is coming..
nt → nn
nk → ng
mp → mm
lt → ll
rt → rr
lki → lje
rki → rje
