The number of students who passed the 12th-grade final exam has shown improvement, according to the Ministry of Education.
Addis Ababa, August 16, 2018 (ENA) - Professor Berhanu Nega, Minister of Education, announced that the number of students who passed the 2018 academic year's 12th-grade final exam has improved.
The Ministry of Education has released an official statement regarding the results of the 12th-grade final exam taken by students in the 2018 academic year.
According to Minister Professor Berhanu Nega, out of the 563,960 students registered to take the exam this year, 550,210 actually took the exam.
Of these, 70,544 students, or 12.8 percent, scored above 50 percent, successfully passing the exam.
The pass rate for students in 2017 was 8.9 percent.
According to the Minister, when looking at the pass rates by subject area, 16.6 percent of students in natural sciences and 8.33 percent of students in social sciences passed.
In the natural sciences, a male student from the Adama Oda Special Boarding School in the Oromia region achieved the highest score of 591.6. The highest score among female students was achieved by a student from the Enjibara Agew School in the Amhara region, with a score of 583.
In the social sciences, the highest scores were 576 for males and 569 for females.
88 schools managed to have all of their students pass the exam, while, conversely, 565 schools had no students pass.
The Minister further stated that, compared to previous years, the improved pass rate means that the number of students who will need to enroll in remedial programs will decrease.
The Minister also indicated that the exact cutoff scores for university admission and remedial programs will be announced soon.
