Dr. Riek Machar, the First Vice President of the Republic, has refused to accept more than 45 (forty five) cows as dowry for the hand (marriage) of his daughter, Judge Meer Riek Machar, during the dowry negotiations yesterday (Sunday) at his residence in Juba.

This is despite the fact that his daughter, Meer, is holding a Masters Degree, and has been a practising lawyer (judge) in London for the last eight years.

This is also despite the fact that the groom's parents offered more cows for the marriage of their son.

Initially, Dr. Riek Machar and his wife, Mama Angelina Teny, only asked for 11 (eleven) cows for the dowry per the initial customary laws.

Their argument is that raising or inflating dowries for marriages as is currently happening in some communities in South Sudan will make it extremely difficult for young people, including graduates, to get married and establish their respective families.

But other relatives from the FVP's side agreed to the reduction to 45, instead of just 11. Their argument is that Dr. Riek will also have to give a number of cows to various uncles of Meer, etc., from the 45 as the customs dictate it.

Also 5 to 8 cows from the 45 cows will be returned to the groom's in-laws as the customs in Western Nuer demands it.

So technically, the dowry is only 37 cows to be paid to the bride's family, from which uncles of the bride, etc., will also be given some cows.

It is important that our leaders set a practical example in the drive to reduce the bride price, and make it affordable to form a family in many communities in South Sudan. A family is a nucleus of a society.

Breaking: Boat carrying Ulang county commissioner attacked at Ying Payam of Ulang county.

The incident happened while commissioner just left from Dome Payam peace tour toward ulang town. Four people were injured and in critical, among them one woman.

ULANG COUNTY COMMUNITY{ CIE-KUETH} PEACE INITIATIVE RECONCILIATION DIALOGUE IN DOMA CENTER.

Today on 13/04/2022 marked the closing day of Doma Peace Conference
The communities of Ulang County have embarked on a five-days peace and reconciliation dialogue in the Doma center.

The conference was organized by the Ulang County Commissioner Hon Gen Riek Gach Gatluak, Elders and local traditional Chiefs The peace initiative was sponsored by the NILE HOPE and WORLD VISION.

The Community Reconciliation Dialogue was attended by more than Three Thousands people [ 3000 ] participants, most of them were from neutral community and others who were mostly representatives of two conflicting sub clans of CIE-Rom and CIE-MANBATHNI sub clans.

✓ it was aimed to normalize the on-going hostilities between the two sisterly sub clans and engage them to find an everlasting peace.
The conference could have been organized since January 2022, unfortunately, that did not happen due to lack of fund.
✓ The conference was held and it's objectives to dialogue on the caused of the conflict and how the communities can be able to resolve them, So that is actually the objective of function in Doma center.

The peace initiative brought together traditional local chiefs, Youth leaders, women, elderly people, Faith base groups, Army generals and other stakeholders.

✓ free movement of both sides in Doma town including the Humanitarians staffs.

On 3rd April 2022, Hon Riek Gach Gatluak, commissioner of Ulang County held two days meeting in Galachel with Upper Nile state Deputy governor James Tor, ministers and others government state constitutional posts holders in Galachel Payam of Baliet County.

Friday 3rd April 2022, H. E James Tor The Deputy Governor of Upper Nile State paid visited to Galachel area and met with two Commissioners of Ulang and Baliet counties.

The meeting basically centered on the working relationship among nieghboring Counties along their common borders and efforts of enhancing peaceful coexistence with the various communities.
The Upper Nile state government pledged it's commitments towards community peace initiative.

✓ Touched on the general security situation along their common borders as calm and stable especially in border between Ulang County community and Baliet community

✓ Hon Riek Gatluak Commissioner of Ulang County Commends the overwhelming hospitality accorded by the people Galachel community , and reiterated their unwavering support as sisterly counties to re-deepening and re-strengthening their working relations to foster peaceful coexistence among vulnerable communities.
