Abstract

Albert Einstein’s equation E = mc² revolutionised modern science by revealing the equivalence of mass and energy within the structure of space–time. The Oromo Gadaa system, though emerging from an indigenous African worldview, presents a comparable philosophical framework: it unites people, land, language, and Waaqa (the divine) within cyclical laws of time and space. This article explores how the concepts of energy, mass, and the speed of light can be reinterpreted through Gadaa philosophy, offering an indigenous model of space–time equivalence.

In modern science, E = mc² encapsulates the deep unity of matter and energy.[^1] In Oromo thought, the Gadaa system encodes a similar unity of society, cosmos, and law.[^2] While not a literal scientific equation, the Oromo worldview provides metaphors and epistemologies that parallel the notion of equivalence and transformation.

2. Mass in Gadaa (m)

Mass, in modern science, is the substance of matter.[^3] In Gadaa, “mass” can be understood as:

The People (Oromo nation as a collective body).
