An Institutional Overview of Post-2018 Reforms in Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives (HoPR)

BRIDGE Research & Innovation for Democratic Governance and Enhanced Peace (BRIDGE), in collaboration with the House of Peoples Representatives of FDRE (HoPR) and with the support of the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD-Ethiopia), is pleased to announce the release of this new research-based publication.

The book offers a comprehensive look at the institutional transformation of Ethiopia’s federal parliament since 2018, examining key areas including:

leads the world, with 63.8% women in its lower house of parliament, followed by (57.2%) and (55.0%).

ranks globally, with 41.9% women in the House of Peoples' Representatives (202 of 482 seats) and 45.5% women serving as Cabinet Ministers (10 of 22), placing the country among Africa's stronger performers in women's political representation.

Sub-Saharan Africa records an average of 27.1% women in parliament, slightly below the global average of 27.5%, while countries such as Rwanda, South Africa, Namibia, and Ethiopia continue to demonstrate the continent's leadership in advancing women's representation.

This is the June/July issue of Enderasie, from BRIDGE's Parliamntary Program, which compiles and presents the core constitutional responsibilities carried out by members of the House of Peoples Representatives of FDRE during the month of June/July, neatly organized under our traditional feature sections. Among the key highlights of the House's activities captured in this edition are listening to current briefings from Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, approving ten vital proclamations, including the historic 2.339 trillion Birr budget plan for the 2019 Fiscal Year and conducting seven explanatory forums on various draft bills. Furthermore, this issue reviews the performance evaluations of executive institutions and the Federal Auditor General's report, highlights the international parliamentary diplomacy engagement in Moscow, and details the endorsement of three international loan agreements dedicated to green development and irrigation modernization.
