A family that encourages girls to go to school and flourish brings hope to themselves and helps build a strong community and a vibrant nation. Girl’s education is a cornerstone of human development, economic progress and wellbeing. Beri-Mayda is the name of the location designated for the construction of a girls education center and hostel. ‘Beri’ in Tigrigna, the local language, means ‘Gate’ and
‘Mayda’ means ‘Wide plain’, the name ‘Beri Mayda’ therefore literally means ‘a gate to a wider plain’. One can clealy see the concept of the project is to : open wider avenues of development for girls by promoting access and quality into their edcuation. Beri Mayda project has broken ground in Samere Sahrti, and its success will pave the way for the vision to flourish acrossTigrai Region and throughout Ethiopia. Beri Mayda recognizes the social, cultural and econmoic impediments to girls education in the area and aims to create an enabling environment where girls education is universal and without a limit be it in the primary, seconday and teritiary level. Why a Girls Education Center and Hostel
Establishing a girls hostel not only addresses the major impediments to their education but also:
• Educating a girl is educating a family and enhanced the family’s’ social and economic power
• It is the sure path for overcoming poverty at home and in the community
• Albeit it took too long to get the universal recognition it deserved educating a girl is not just about the academics and not even just the fulfillment of women’s equal right to education. It empowers women and her family, strengthens the community and beyond in bringing social, economic welfare. Its impact is societal and the changes it brings in many ways than one is fundamental. Beri Mayda will be situated in a campus with facilities adequate capacity to host about 80 girls catering to their educational and boarding needs.
