Hope Enterprise University College (HEUC) hosted the official inauguration of the acclaimed book “The Chaos Precinct: Johannesburg as a Port City” authored by Dr. Tanya Zack, a renowned South African urban planner and researcher at the Wits School of Architecture and Planning. The event took place in the University’s multipurpose hall and was organized by the School of Architecture.
The inauguration opened with a warm welcome address delivered by Dr. Behailu Abebe, Vice President for Research, Community Service, and Publication (VPRCS) of HEUC. In his remarks, Dr. Behailu emphasized the importance of urban scholarship and interdisciplinary dialogue in understanding migration, informality, and spatial transformation in African cities.
The session was facilitated by W/ro Keniko Duguma, Dean of the School of Architecture, who also served as the stage host throughout the program. Following the opening, insightful book reviews were presented by two distinguished scholars:
• Dr. Wubishet Berhanu, Associate Professor at EiABC, Addis Ababa University, and former City Manager of Addis Ababa City Administration; and
• Dr. Elias Yitbarek, Associate Professor at EiABC, known for his expertise in housing and urbanism.
Their reviews highlighted the book’s vivid exploration of how Ethiopian migrants have transformed Johannesburg’s inner city into a vibrant, informal trade hub—a “port city” of social and economic exchange far from the ocean.
After the reviews, Dr. Tanya Zack delivered an engaging author’s reflection, offering context on her research journey and insights into the intersections of migration, identity, and urban informality. A moderated panel discussion, led by Yohannes Tsegay, followed, encouraging dialogue between the author, faculty, and students on parallels between Johannesburg and Ethiopian urban experiences.
The event attracted more than one hundred attendees, including faculty, students, and guests from Hope Enterprise University College, Addis Ababa University, and other academic institutions. The closing remarks were made by Architect Enanu Girma of HEUC’s School of Architecture, who commended the event as a model for academic collaboration and knowledge exchange.
The program concluded with a tea and networking session, where participants engaged informally with Dr. Zack and the reviewers—marking the day as an inspiring celebration of scholarship, dialogue, and international collaboration.
