We are looking forward to hosting a roundtable on "Reaching and Teaching the Girl Child in Sub-Saharan Africa during Covid-19” on November 25th, 2021.

This roundtable will facilitate the exchange of knowledge on the implementation and effect of programs needed to reach and teach girls and teen mothers who are at risk of dropping out.

As we buildup to the roundtable, check out some of the innovative approaches of global grantee, War Child Holland, who are spearheading the "Can't Wait to Learn" project, 'a tablet-based gamified learning programme' aiming to increase 'equitable enrolment, attendance and retention'. Learn more about their work and engagement with Hub country partner, Uganda, in this recently published blog post: https://gpekix.org/blog/partnerships-progress-education-technology-countries-affected-conflict. Dear Teachers, Former Teachers, and Teacher Educators: Today, let's remember who's at the heart of the education system. Let's remember who's often not consulted enough when decisions are made. Let's remember who inspired us to grow up to be teachers ourselves at one point in time, even if it was long ago. Let's remember who's reached billions of children with creativity (with or without technology) and compassionate explanations for a confusing and scary world in 2020 and 2021. Let's remember our Teachers.

Today the KIX Africa 19 Hub hosted the second part of a series of webinars on Disability-Inclusive Education in Africa. Led by UNICEF Africa, today's session focused on improving interventions related to the data challenges related to the learning of children with disabilities.

We heard from Bernandine Mukakizima from UNICEF Rwanda who shared an informative presentation on how KIX Africa 19 Hub country partner, Rwanda, has strengthened and reinforced institutional capacity. For example, she noted how Ministry of Education, Rwanda is developing a disability management and information system for persons with disabilities (2021-2023) to better identify, understand and support individual learning needs using case management tools.

Following the presentation, Hub country partners shared initiatives and good practices to support the learning of children with disabilities through the use of ICT at different levels of the education system, including in school and through online platforms.

A participant from Lesotho remarked how in her country the Ministry of Education and Training - Lesotho uses, "an EMIS that collects information related to children with disabilities such as the type of disability, gender, age." She emphasized its importance for "budget purposes and interventions to support of children with disabilities".

An innovative approach to collecting this data is to “integrate these questions with other surveys such as the health information survey” to streamline costs as shared by a participant from Unicef Eritrea who was joined by representatives from Eritrea's Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare.

Ending the session, Yetnebersh Mola from poignantly shared a quote from a friend, "In Kenya we know how many lions and rhinos we have but we still don’t know the number of children with disabilities” and appreciated participants efforts to reach the answer.

See more below:

Yesterday, 1 September 2021, hosted a webinar on “How to create safe learning spaces during conflicts, emergencies, and the COVID-19 pandemic”. The webinar is part of the project on the Prevention of violent extremism and its resurgence amid the COVID-19 pandemic through education in Africa, aligned with the spirit of TICAD7 and NAPSA funded by the Government of Japan.
The purpose of this webinar was to engage African educationists on the importance of creating a safe learning environment for young learners.

The webinar presenters were, Dr. Tigist Yeshiwas Engdaw Senior Advisor on Peacebuilding and Reconciliation at the Ministry of Peace, . She is also an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Peace and Security; Dr. Ilham Nasser Senior Researcher and Director of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT); Mr. Darius Mogaka Director of University Education and Research, Ministry of Education, ; and Ms. Shreya Jani from UNESCO MGIEP.

Moderated by Dr Victoria Kisaakye Kanobe, Senior Project Coordinator, IICBA, the 90-minutes webinar created a platform for 50 educationists to discuss the challenges of safe learning spaces and their impact on learners in conflicts and emergencies, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, needs of learners in times of conflicts and emergencies, proposed approaches, and Strategies identified to strengthen learners' safe learning spaces and socio-emotional learning, and the role of key stakeholders.

Dr. Yumiko Yokozeki, Director of UNESCO IICBA stressed that Peace is not the mere absence of conflict and weapons. Peace is the condition that enables children and people to thrive and to self-actualize. Peace is the action of governments to build inclusive quality education, economic justice, and social harmony. There can be no peace without justice. There can be no peace when oppression, hunger of the body and mind, inequality, and structural violence exist. She also stressed the importance of safe teaching and learning environments for young people so that young people will engage with their societies as active citizens and champions of peace.
