💡 Success starts with structure!

If youth participation is left as an occasional activity, it rarely creates lasting change. The strongest organisations are those that embed youth leadership into their DNA.

That means:
– 🗳 Youth boards and councils where young people have a real vote on decisions.
– 🤝 Advisory groups that co-create programmes side by side with adults.
– 🏛 Leadership roles in governance – making sure youth voices shape not only projects, but the direction of the organisation itself.

📢 Our research shows that when youth leadership is built into structures, not added as a one-off, it creates more inclusive, open, and democratic organisations. It also gives young people the confidence and responsibility to grow into leaders who inspire others.

👉 Let’s move beyond symbolic participation. Real leadership starts with real structures.

💬 “Youth work needs young people. That’s why we want them directly involved in shaping the work, not just receiving it.”

Too often, youth are seen only as participants or beneficiaries. But our research proves that when young people step into real leadership roles – when they sit at the decision-making table, co-design activities, and shape the direction of organisations – the results are transformative. 🌟

🚀 When young people lead:
– Organisations become more innovative – with fresh ideas and creative solutions.
– Work stays relevant – addressing real issues young people care about, from climate change to mental health.
– Impact grows – youth-led initiatives build stronger connections with communities and inspire others to engage.

Youth leadership is not just symbolic. It makes youth work more inclusive, more powerful, and more future-focused. 🙌

👉 That’s why the Transformative Youth Leadership (TYL) project is working to create more open, democratic and youth-driven spaces across Europe.

🌍✨ What holds back inclusive youth leadership?

Young people are ready to lead, but many face challenges that limit their voices and opportunities. Our research shows that organisations across Europe identify several key barriers:

– ⏳ Limited resources – small budgets and lack of staff make it hard to sustain long-term youth leadership structures.
– 🏛 Bureaucracy & rigid structures – formal systems often block or slow down youth participation in decision-making.
– 👨‍🦳 Adultism – adults not sharing power, or assuming young people are “not ready” to lead.
– 🌍 Rural depopulation & low engagement – fewer opportunities for young people in rural and disadvantaged areas.
– 🔒 Lack of diversity – leadership roles are often taken by the same groups, leaving marginalised youth excluded.

💪 Overcoming these challenges is key to empowering the next generation.
When we break down these barriers, youth leadership becomes not just a principle but a real force for innovation, inclusion, and social change.

👉 Join us in building organisations that are inclusive, open, and democratic – where young people have the power to shape the future!
