Today we were in talks with Luke, a research assistant currently studying the expansion of wolf populations in the south of Spain, looking at habitat preferences & possibilities etc. Luke mentioned he’s learning loads of new skills, but more importantly seeing this field of work, something he is used to working within back home, in a European context has been very helpful. There’s loads of new ways of working that are new to Luke, which will be beneficial to him for when he returns home!
Luke mentioned that he’s enjoying the pace of life here in Seville – going on to mention how he feels quite safe here considering there are people out on the streets enjoying the scenery and a cerveza at all times of day and night, so one never feels too lonely on the Sevillian streets!

We popped into Aimee today, who is currently working as a research assistant, studying the impacts and mitigation of linear infrastructure on biodiversity. Aimee is loving being surrounded by field professionals, especially in the research and conservation field. Aimee mentioned how different the Spanish way of life is (in a good way!) and she’s enjoying exploring all of those differences, like the blue skies and the all the different birds living in Seville!
Walking around Seville, taking in the sights and just getting lost in the many winding streets of Seville has been very enjoyable for Aimee. Having the opportunity to see how her field of work differs in a global context, compared to back home. When asked if Aimee would recommend the Turing Scheme to others, she said absolutely! Are you interested in exploring the natural landscape of Spain, as well as the urban sprawl of Seville? Then check out our link in bio for loads of placement opportunities!

We visited Rachel, who’s currently on placement here in with . Rachel runs and manages the social media accounts of a slow sustainable fashion brand here in the city.
Rachel loves the creative environment and finds it rewarding to learn a new language while immersing herself in Spanish culture. Her skills in photography, photo editing, and video editing have flourished alongside her social media management abilities. She’s also picked up a fun lesson: never hold pens in your mouth while working!
The Turing Scheme has boosted Rachel’s confidence, proving she can thrive in a new country despite language barriers. This experience has enriched her life, leading to lifelong friendships and a newfound belief in her abilities. She describes her time in Spain as fun, relaxing, and enriching. 🌟

Today we were talking with Nancy, who’s currently working on the Craymap Project; a project monitoring invasive crayfish and crab species in the south of Spain. Nancy is really enjoying the practical side of her job – getting out into the natural landscape of Spain and exploring all the flora and fauna it has to offer; especially seeing parts of Spain that she wouldn’t have gotten to explore otherwise; such as mountains and protected nature reserves. When asked what her favourite spot she’s visited so far, Nancy told us it’s definitely Rio Tínto; a river that is extremely mineral rich and as such runs a beautiful dark red colour for the length of the river. So cool!
A typical day for Nancy can be very varied, whether she is out on field work or reviewing the field work data in the office but she mentioned how it feels very affirming and that it’s a lot of fun working in a professional academic space, especially working with other professionals.

This week, we’re talking to Grace; who’s currently on placement with 3SI working in the field of plants, evolution and ecology. Currently she is studying how environmental factors change the appearance of plants & whether those traits can be inherited into future strains of that plant life. ¡Muy científico! A typical day for Grace involves a whole lot of scientific research, maintenance of the greenhouse in her workplace, care for the plants, documenting them and when necessary, culling the crop to take it into the lab and study it.
Grace has been enjoying pottering around Seville, practicing her Spanish and interacting with the people of Seville. She mentioned that just a few nights previously, she spent the night chatting away to a local dancer from Triana. Practicing Spanish has been a highlight for Grace and she’s loving her life here in the south of Espana!
When asked if she would recommend this scheme, she said absolutely! As for why, Grace told us it’s an excellent way to hone your skills in a specific field of work and that there are countless benefits to immersing oneself into a different culture; she’s summed up her experience here so far as this; educational, adventurous and sunny. ☀

English teaching is a lucrative field of work pretty much across the globe and it’s no different here in Seville. Here at 3SI we find work placements for many throughout the year and we sat down with Khalayi and Marta to ask them how they’re getting on teaching. Both of the girls are loving life here in Spain, with Khalayi mentioning that she had an interest in living in Spain prior to this placement, so this has been a great opportunity for her to experience the Spanish way of life. Both teachers mentioned how rewarding it is getting to work with younger kids, with one of the pair mentioning how it’s rewarding to have a funny moment like the whole class erupting into a “¡Vale!” when they finally all understand what’s being taught.
Marta mentioned how much a positive it is living in Seville due to the fact that everything is open much later than back home, which allows for her to develop a more flourishing social life; there’s always somewhere to hang out regardless of the time of day!
The feedback from both the students and teachers has been a massive positive according to the girls, who previously had never worked within this field of work. The practical experience, positive feedback and peppy atmosphere at work all come together to make a very enjoyable job in a very enjoyable city!
