EMJMDPHID has welcomed a significant number of scholars from to its programme so far. Bangladesh is a South Asian country located on the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta and has the Bay of Bengal in the south.

It is common knowledge that, because of its geographical location, this land is prone to different nature-related disasters, such as cyclones, floods, earthquakes, etc. But what many people don't know about is the lush green beauty it possesses.

From the green and yellow fields to the gray and blue rivers, from the bustling cities and towns full of life to the quiet and lonely mountains and forests, Bangladesh is abundant in nature that grows boldly without any care. Here are some photos to portray a different picture of Bangladesh.

** All disasters are hazards, but all hazards are not disasters. **

A is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society at any scale due to hazardous events interacting with conditions of exposure, vulnerability, and capacity, leading to one or more of the following: human, material, economic, and environmental losses and impacts (https://www.undrr.org/).

Whereas a is a natural process or phenomenon that may pose negative impacts on the economy, society, and ecology, including both natural factors and human factors that are associated with the natural ones (https://www.undrr.org/).

Hazards do not necessarily cause any destruction to life and property, but they are the origin of disasters. A hazard becomes a disaster when the potential to cause destruction or harm to life and property of humans is fulfilled. If an earthquake were to hit a mountain with no human community, it would simply be a natural phenomenon or a natural hazard.

Contrary to popular belief, natural hazards alone do not result in disasters. When they intersect with human activities and vulnerable assets, these hazards turn into catastrophic events that lead to disasters. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) emphasizes that human actions such as deforestation, urbanization, and inadequate infrastructure worsen the impacts of events like floods, earthquakes, and storms. For instance, building in flood-prone areas increases the vulnerability to floods, transforming a hazard into a possible devastating disaster for communities settled close to rivers (https://unu.edu/ehs).

Just as human actions can cause disasters, they can also prevent them. Ultimately, disasters do not occur in isolation from human influence. The decisions and behaviors of individuals and societies significantly shape the magnitude and impact of hazards. Rather than despair, this is a cause for hope. By changing our behaviors and actions, we can directly make a positive influence to prevent hazards from turning into disasters or minimize disaster impacts. Understanding why disasters occur in the first place helps in creating strategies to address their root causes and identify long-term solutions (https://unu.edu/ehs).

Every disaster comes with several risks. Risk of losing lives, risk of injuries, financial risks, environmental risks, etc. Disaster risk reduction refers to strategies adopted to reduce these risks and make communities more resilient against disasters.

Disaster and risk reduction is not the work of a single organization; collaboration between different stakeholders is much needed. Here are some categories of people and organizations who help in disaster and risk reduction:

International Organizations:
1. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR): They have the responsibility for disaster risk reduction activities globally.
2. International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC): They also promote activities that help in disaster risk reduction and humanitarian aid.
3. World Bank: Facilitates disaster risk management and risk finance.
4. Oxfam: Aims at providing humanitarian assistance and promoting disaster risk reduction.
5. Save the Children: Engages in projects that are geared towards child focused disaster risk management.
6. CARE: The Cooperative Assistance Relief Everywhere (CARE) advocates for disaster risk reduction and also assists in humanitarian activities.

Government Representatives:
1. National Disaster Management Authorities: Has the role of planning for disaster and coordinating all actors during a given disaster situation.
2. Emergency Management Directors: In charge of the coordination of the emergency preparedness cycle.
3. Ministers of Interior / Home Affairs / Disaster Management: Charged with the authority for disaster and national security concerns.
4. Local Government Units:
5. Mayors/City Managers: Responsible for the planning of the local area plans on disaster risk reduction.
6. Municipal Local Emergency Management Officers: Manage response and recovery coordination.
7. Local Councilors / Chiefs, and Sub Chiefs: Work with the community to build disaster resilience.

Academia and Research:
1. Disaster Researchers: Study disaster risk management and building community resilience.
2. Universities: Undertake research, education, and training.
3. Think Tanks: Conduct policy analysis and provide advice.

Private Sector:
1. Insurance Companies: Facilitate the transfer of risk.
2. Technology Companies: Create disaster-resistant structures and technologies.
3. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiatives: Promote measures for reducing losses in case of disasters or other crisis situations.

Community Members:
1. Volunteers: Assist in the prompt response to the disaster and its effects.
2. Local Business Owners: Help in the rebuilding efforts of the local and national economies.
3. Individuals with Disabilities: Help in better understanding the vulnerability of people with specific requirements for disaster risk reduction.

Other Stakeholders:
1. Media: Social media marginalises the community but promotes community education towards dissemination of effective messages.
2. Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs): Facilitate promotion and strengthening of communities affected by irreversible developments and provide humanitarian assistance.
3. International Financial Institutions: Render financial support and supervisory ability.

It is contended that effective disaster and risk reduction cannot be implemented in an isolated manner by any of these stakeholders. That is why it is crucial to know who the stakeholders are to ensure a comprehensive strategy to mitigate and respond to disasters.

When we hear Spain 🇪🇦, cities like Barcelona, Madrid surface in our mind mostly. However, there is a small, calm quiet place called Oviedo in the Principality of Asturias holding a historic University that has been hosting Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Public Health in Disasters (EMJMPHID) since 2013.

🎓The University of Oviedo (Universidad de Oviedo in Spanish) is one of the three universities in theconsortium of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree in Public Health in Disasters (EMJMDPHID). It isa public university in Asturias, a place surrounded by Cantabrian mountains and the mighty Atlantic Ocean. It is the only university in the region and has three campuses and research centres, located in Oviedo,Gijón, and Mieres. The University of Oviedo, the academic institution of higher education in Oviedo, boasts over 400 years of history combining tradition and modernity. Its historic building has witnessed memorable events such as the French Revolution and the Spanish Civil War.
However, the University of Oviedo is much more than its history. Each year, thousands of students, professors, researchers, and administrative staff pass through its modern facilities, located in various parts of the Principality of Asturias. 80% of the research conducted in Asturias bears the University of Oviedo’s brand. The University of Oviedo offers 120 degrees in a complete academic offering in all branches of
knowledge, bilingual pathways, double degrees with international universities, Erasmus Mundus, andinter-university master’s degrees in collaboration with over 250 companies. Currently, the University of
Oviedo has nearly 28,000 students, more than a thousand of whom are international.

In 2009, the Universidad de Oviedo was labelled as a Campus of International Excellence by theGovernment of Spain. The CEI recognition was based on the “Ad Futurum” initiative, whose objectives are
fostering excellence in research, development, and innovation, with a special focus on biomedicine & health, and in which some of the teachers and researchers of the Department of Medicine are actively involved. In 2012, the University of Oviedo was included by the University of Cambridge in the list ofworld-excellence universities.

In fine words, the university has all the strengths of an institution well-established in its territory withhundreds of years of history, yet it looks to the future with enthusiasm and ambition.

Come, see, and enjoy!🍀

Over the decades, there has been an unprecedented increase in the scope and intensity of disasters worldwide, ranging from floods, landslides, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc. That is why it is important to prevent and mitigate the risks that disasters pose to people, economies, and ecosystems.

This burden to ensure that our communities are resilient to both natural and man-made disasters falls not only on governments and the international community, but more importantly on us at the local level to recover from and build more sustainable communities.

Prevention and response to disasters is .
Let’s do our part!

“Life-changing” is the best way to describe my Erasmus journey in the Public Health in Disasters masters program at Oviedo University, Spain, and Karolinska Institute, Sweden. I’m a medical doctor and public health professional from Yemen with over five years of experience working in humanitarian settings with international NGOs and the UN. This program gave me the chance to expand my horizons. From Yemen to the world, I lived abroad, travelled solo, explored new cultures, and built lifetime friendships. I engaged in thought-provoking discussions with students and lecturers from across the globe, gaining a degree from a top-ranked university. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to grow personally and professionally!

🌍 Today is World Hepatitis Day! 🩺

On 28 July, we unite to amplify our efforts against hepatitis on both national and international levels. Let's seize this opportunity to inspire action and engagement from individuals, partners, and the public, highlighting the need for a robust global response as emphasized in the WHO's Global Hepatitis Report of 2017.

To achieve our global elimination goals by 2030, addressing the crucial gap in testing and treatment coverage is paramount.

Remember, you have one life, and you have one liver. Hepatitis can have a devastating impact on both.

While your liver diligently performs over 500 vital functions every single day to keep you alive, viral hepatitis remains silent, only revealing symptoms in advanced stages. Among the various types of hepatitis viruses (A to E), hepatitis B and C pose the most significant concerns, causing nearly 8000 new infections every day, many of which go undetected.(WHO)

The consequences are staggering: over one million hepatitis-related deaths annually, translating to one new chronic infection every ten seconds. Indeed, liver health is fundamental to human health.

Yet, there is hope! Countless hepatitis-related deaths can be prevented through available vaccines and effective treatments for hepatitis B, and a cure for hepatitis C. You have the power to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Let's take action together! Reach out to your local healthcare provider to learn how you can safeguard yourself from hepatitis. Together, we can build a healthier and hepatitis-free world. 💚
