Solo sailing is something I don't do that often and when I do it's usually small coastal trips. With Judy away this time though I want to put in some sea miles and I'm heading offshore to the Island of Elba. It turns out to be quite an eye opener!

The best bit of gear to have on a cruising boat | Ep 171 09/07/2026

We used to have fold up bikes aboard Fair Isle, we loved having them but they fell apart quickly, were heavy and awkward to store and to be honest were no where near as nice to ride as a 'proper' bike. So we didn't replace our bikes when we took them off the boat 5 years ago in Turkey.
But then we test rode some Brompton bikes in Gibraltar earlier this year. We showed it in one of our episodes, we happed to go into a bike store to hire some electric bikes to go up the rock ( the cable car is out of action for the next few years) and they had a range of Bromptons for test rides.
Well that was it we were smitten.
So we are now doing some longer term testing with Brompton and managed to pick up a couple of bikes in Barcelona that they had sitting there after a partnership with Britannia ( our Americas cup team ) So if you want to see what a top of the range tungsten and carbon fibre is like to have aboard make sure you watch this episode.

Regular viewers will know we've been looking for the best bikes to have on the boat for some time. You may also have seen us try out some Bromptons a few months ago in Gibraltar. Well, after riding a Brompton I can tell you nothing else cuts it, not even close.
It's difficult to pin point exactly what it is, obviously they fold up into a seemingly impossibly small size, but they don't ride like a fold up bike, everything is solid.
Luckily for us Brompton sponsor the Brittania Americas cup sailing team and they had some very special bikes they could lend us.
These are 'T-Line' bikes, so called because the frame is made of Titanium, also the seat post and handle bars are made of carbon fibre, so the bike weighs in at a ridiculously light 7.45kg.
This not only makes it easy to carry on and off the boat but effortless to ride, we are seriously impressed.
These bikes don't come cheap, but if you have the money there can be nothing better for a boat, nothing to rust. Light, small and great to ride. We are very much looking forward to putting them through their paces this summer.

You may have seen our test of the new Spirit2 outboard from ePropulsion last week. I never thought it would be possible to get an electric outboard that can get you on the plane.
We've been loving using the Spirit 2 but after travelling over 20,000nm using our Truekit dinghy as our tender, battling with the heat of Africa, the Caribbean and Central America and crossing the Atlantic twice we felt it was time the get a new dinghy to go with the new motor.
We had thought about getting a larger dinghy with a solid bottom, but we love the fact we can haul the Truekit aboard without using a halyard, it lies low and flat so doesn't obscure our view forward and of course is light enough that it will plane with one person using the Spirit2.
So we are very happy to have another Truekit and very pleased that they now come with a strong, light, aluminium transom, perfect for more power.

Can you run a cruising boat on solar? Including the new Bluetti Elite 300 21/06/2026

If you want to go cruising on a boat and don't have/want to rely on a generator for your power make sure you watch this video.
We pulled out our unreliable, noisy, smelly diesel generator 6 years ago and have relied on solar ever since.
At first it was a struggle a times to get enough power, we are on a monohull so don't have massive space for solar, but we now have a set up that lets us cook on the induction hob and still have more power than we can use.
This video goes through the set up, the pitfalls and all the finer points of collecting and storing all the power you will need to live aboard.

Can you run a cruising boat on solar? Including the new Bluetti Elite 300 We now think we have the perfect set-up for our on board power. We ...
