🇬🇧 How Brits Say Something Smells Bad

Wow, it reeks!

If something smells bad, don’t just say “it smells.”

Try these natural British expressions instead:

✅ It reeks.
✅ It stinks.
✅ It’s pongy.
✅ It’s whiffy.

These are the kinds of words native speakers actually use when something smells really bad!

🇬🇧 How Brits REALLY talk about back pain.

▫️ “I’ve got a twinge in my back.”
▫️ “My back’s been playing up.”
▫️ “It’s giving me gip.”
▫️ “I think I’ve put my back out.”
▫️ “It’s killing me.”
▫️ “It’s murder.”

Save this if you want to sound more natural in everyday British English.

🇬🇧 In England, politeness is almost a social currency.

British Tidbits — Part 1

In this series, we explore British etiquette, politeness, social conventions, and all the little cultural things that confuse people learning English.

Today’s topic: why politeness matters so much in the UK

You can be frustrated, annoyed, or completely fed up… but the expectation is still to stay calm, indirect, and polite.

Sometimes, the more polite someone sounds, the more annoyed they actually are.

A simple:
“Excuse me, sorry to bother you, but I think there’s been a mistake…” will usually get a much better reaction than anger or confrontation.

In British culture, people often avoid direct conflict whenever possible. Tone matters. Manners matter. And being polite can completely change the atmosphere in a situation.

That’s why phrases like:
• “When you’ve got a moment…”
• “Would you mind…”
• “I was just wondering if…”
• “Sorry, but I think…”

are everywhere in everyday English.

Politeness goes a very long way in the UK.

🇬🇧 In English, over-the-counter and under-the-counter mean two completely different things!

💊 Over-the-counter (OTC) medication = medicine you can buy directly from a pharmacy without a prescription from a doctor.

Examples:
• Paracetamol
• Ibuprofen
• Cold and flu medicine

🚫 Under-the-counter is very different.
It usually means something unofficial, secret, or even illegal — for example, selling something secretly that you’re not really supposed to sell.

Example:
“They sold it under the counter.”

English can be tricky sometimes… one small word changes the entire meaning!

🇬🇧 If you want to sound more natural in English, “smelly” is a bit basic.

Here are some more natural (and very British) alternatives:

👉 It’s a bit whiffy
👉 It stinks
👉 Wow… it smells like a French brothel in here 😅

Small vocabulary upgrades like this make your English sound more fluent and native-like.

Save this for later + try using one today.

🇬🇧Do you confuse borrow and lend in English?

Here’s the easiest way to remember it.

➡️ BORROW = you TAKE
➡️ LEND = you GIVE

Simple memory trick:
✅ You borrow FROM someone
✅ You lend TO someone

Examples:
✏️ “Can I borrow your pen?”
= I take it from you

✏️ “Can I lend you my pen?”
= I give it to you

💰 “I borrow money from the bank.”
💰 “The bank lends me money.”

Save this post so you never mix them up again.

🇬🇧 Detectorists is a gentle British comedy-drama about two friends who spend their weekends metal detecting in the English countryside, searching for hidden artefacts from Britain’s Roman, Saxon, and Viking past.

It’s funny, calm, emotional, and full of natural everyday British English. The slow pace and realistic conversations make it excellent for English learners who want to improve listening skills, understand British humour, and learn authentic expressions that people actually use in daily life.

Above all, it’s simply a warm, charming, feel-good show.
