🟧 Together with the highly respected and our beloved Olga Alieva (HSE Moscow) we have uploaded to the Byzantine Literature section the entire book of Basil the Great — now fully complete! 🤩

🟧 We’ve also prepared a new learning module — μέρος 4! It includes chapters IV. ΟΙΚΙΑ — IVγ. ΑΙ ΑΘΗΝΑΙ. More about the grammar covered in this module:

1️⃣ Lesson 4.1: a continuation of the grammar on the attributive construction. In lesson 2.4 we discussed the attributive adjective — in the new lesson we explore the attributive noun in the genitive case, of three types (gen. subiectivus, gen. obiectivus / causalis, gen. passivus).

1️⃣ Lesson 4.1: in addition to the attributive construction covered in 2.4, the new lesson introduces the concept of the “objective construction” and begins analysis of case syntax — the first case examined is the genitive (linked to the previous grammar topic).

2️⃣ Lesson 4.2: continuation of the grammar on pronouns. In lessons 1.4, 2.1, and 2.5 we have already examined interrogative (direct and indirect), demonstrative, and personal pronouns (including reflexive, possessive, and reciprocal). The new lesson covers the full paradigm of relative pronouns and their syntax.

3️⃣ Lesson 4.3: continuation and completion of the grammar from 3.3 on adjective formation — this time we analyze derivation from nouns and adjectives.

4️⃣ Lesson 4.4: a new topic — adverbs, with general theory and semantic classification.

🟧 Two days ago in the "readings" section of the Latin area, a free book-self-study guide has been released, which currently contains 5 short chapters on the first basic grammatical topics: 1st declension & 1st conjugation.

🟧 We decided to release this book not as a full-fledged one, with exegetical commentaries and translations into different languages, but precisely as a practical self-tutor: minimum grammar & maximum translation exercises.

🟧 The method of working with the book is simple: 1) listen to the text; 2) in the "comments" section, find exercises for translation ENG>LAT or LAT>ENG; 3) do these written exercises on your own; 4) open the next section "translations" and in the corresponding sections (i.e., English for LAT>ENG translations // Latin for ENG>LAT translations) check the answers, conducting a self-check.

With unrestrained delight, we present to you the completely renewed ACRO — both in appearance and in content — now featuring three sections: Greek, Latin, and Byzantine!

At this moment, the Latin section includes chapters from Cicero’s Tusculan Disputations and Ovid’s Metamorphoses, as well as two introductory lessons (INITIVM and PARS PRIMA) in the learning section.

The Byzantine section, at least for now, will feature Byzantine literature.

We are sincerely glad that this major update and important milestone for us became the result of a collaboration with our friends, the “Anti-Barbari” of HSE, represented by our colleagues Polina Krupinina and Olga Alieva!

Lately, we have been working hard to prepare a new book for release — and it so happened (no coincidence!) that yesterday, on International Women's Day, thanks to our dear colleague Olga Alieva and our friends at the Antibarbari association, who prepared a wonderful educational publication in 2022, the first full-fledged book in the AKRO series is being released — Gorgias' “Helen’s Encomium”!

The second most popular expectation from ACRO, as the TG-poll showed (https://t.me/akrogreek/54), is new chapters of Herodotus — and we have already added them!

These are chapters 1.7 and 1.8, in the latter of which Herodotus does not hesitate to tell about the strange sexual deviation of Candaules, the ruler of Sardis.

A very strange way to boast of one’s own wife’s beauty, though.

We have released a new section in learning section (μέρος 3), which includes chapters IIIε. ΔΙΑΛΟΓΟΣ — ΙΙΙθ. ΚΩΜΗ.

The grammar in this section is again focused on syntax: the most important, in our opinion, and not the most obvious explanations are given in lesson 3 (δίδαγμα 3.3), which deals with verbal adjectives, including those ending in -τέος, and their syntactic position.

As always, in addition to grammar, there are dictionaries and exercises for each lesson.

A new digest of the latest updates!

🟧 We have added four new chapters from Rouse’s textbook to the open reading section!

🟧 We have added a new dialogue of Lucian: this time between Zeus and Helios, about the unhappy fate of the young Phaethon, who failed to manage the sun chariot… The dialogue, like Lucian’s other dialogues, is lively, rich in vocabulary, and subtly reflects the characters of the two speakers.

🌟Lucian’s dialogues are available by subscription, which you can take out in any convenient way for whatever period you like!🌟

A small digest of the latest updates!

🟧 We’ve added four new chapters from Rouse’s textbook to the library section. All released and upcoming chapters will be available for free to every user!

🟧 We’ve added Latin translations of two fragments by Sappho, prepared in collaboration with Olga Alieva and the “Antibarbari” Association (HSE)! This time, the translations come with commentary — and not without reason, as we’ll explain later in the next post.

🟧 We’ve improved the “search” function, allowing you to find any grammar topic covered in the learning section.

🟧 The biggest update concerns vocabulary: from now on, every premium user is equipped with the most full and rich Greek-Russian dictionary, that of A. O. Pospishil. This vocabulary is inserted in “search” section: so you only have to tap the necessary word to find it out!

Fresh from the oven, our big new update has just been released, and it includes:

1) a new version of the app;

2) a new book;

3) a new learning section!

A bit more detail about each part of the new update:

🟧 We now have a section with readers! AKRO is a project that we create together with those who love texts as much as we do. Now in the book details you can see who is reading it for you and open other books by the same reader. Very soon you will hear many voices, including ones already well known to you! 😉 Plus, we have fixed many small technical issues.

🟧 The new book includes the beautiful 1st and 31st fragments of Sappho, which were kindly recorded specially for AKRO by our colleague and friend, the wonderful classical philologist from HSE, Olga Alieva!

🟧 In the new learning section (Unit 2) you will find texts III, IIIa, IIIb, IIIc and IIId from Rouse, which continue the description of the surrounding nature and expand the vocabulary, including fairly rare notions. The grammar in this section is extensive and rich, focused on the basics of syntax: what is a subject and a predicate? what is agreement? what exceptions to agreement rules are there? what is an attributive construction? The grammar of the final, 5th lesson is devoted to revising all the topics studied earlier, while at the same time deepening them.
