Old School Closed Guard Pass: Sao Paolo!
1. Tripod
2. Pin wrist
3. Sprawl back
4. Pass & Enjoy
Doing it 'wrong' can be a good strategic choice. Leaning back in closed guard will probably lead the opponent to sit up, and might give you a chance to lock a guilliotine. If he does, balance his body on his sacrum, and you will have a easy time passing his guard. For more videos like this one, follow our channel, or go to hub.yogaforbjj.net and sign in for free!
Steal my secret how to teach inversions without really teaching it:
1. Break the position down into it's LCDs (lowest common denominators)
This means for inverting:
✅hamstring flexibility
✅use legs and elbow to lift hips
✅using free leg for momentum
✅balance on shoulder
Once your students (or yourself) understand these 4 key elements, you can then move on to..
2. Eco Game - Create a game where the training partner 'tries' to attack, but is in fact helping you perform the movement correctly.
In this example, as soon as the training partner grabs the feet or gets close enough to act as a frame, your top leg will get enough resistance for you to recover guard.
Now here is the kicker: It doesn't matter which way you will recover guard, that will happen _automatically_! So by learning the foundational 'balancing on the shoulder' postition, your training partner will force you to invert whichever way comes naturally.
This method is both quicker, more fun, more intuitive, and less likely to confuse you with contradictions and complexity.
This clip is from FMT, the biggest gym in Oslo. One student told the head coach that after these 5 minutes, he inverted by himself for the first time ever.
I don't want to take credit for this myself, but rather want to emphasize the cornerstone principle of grappling:
ALL TECHNIQUES ARE BASED ON FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURE AND MOVEMENT. When you learn the core positions of your own body and how to move (flow) between those positions, all techniques will be easier to learn.
Comment 'Dang' if this gave you an epiphany and you want to learn how to move better with less effort.
