Happy World Octopus Day! 🐙
Octopuses play an important role in healthy marine ecosystems both as predators and as prey, helping keep marine food webs balanced.
But instead of just celebrating them, let’s actually learn a little more about one of the most fascinating animals we get to meet underwater.
Did you know that…
🐙 Octopuses have three hearts — two pump blood through the gills, while the third circulates it around the rest of the body.
💙 Their blood is actually blue because they use a copper-based molecule called hemocyanin to transport oxygen.
🧠 A large part of their nervous system is located throughout their eight arms, allowing them to process an incredible amount of sensory information.
🎨 They can change not only their colour, but also the pattern and texture of their skin to camouflage themselves.
🧩 They are remarkable problem-solvers. Octopuses have been observed solving puzzles, opening containers and even using objects as tools.
🤏 And because they don't have a rigid skeleton, they can squeeze through surprisingly tiny gaps. If their hard beak can fit through, the rest of them often can too.
