Your HbA1c might not be telling you the full story.
Most people think of it as the blood sugar number. But it’s not just measuring glucose — it’s also measuring how long your red blood cells stick around.
Long-lived red blood cells = more time to pick up glucose = a falsely high reading, even if your blood sugar is actually fine.
Short-lived red blood cells (common with low iron or B12) = less time to glycate = a falsely low reading, even if your blood sugar is a real problem.
And on top of that, HbA1c doesn’t tell you where the glycation is happening in your body — just that it is, somewhere.
This is why I like pairing it with a fructosamine test. It only picks up glucose glycation, no red blood cell lifespan noise messing with the number.
