Loriana Salierno

Loriana Salierno Researcher and dancer working on dance as culture, history, and embodied knowledge, with a focus on Oriental Dance and Flamenco.

I am an Italian researcher and dancer whose work bridges literature, history, and the performing arts, exploring the shared symbolic heritage of the Mediterranean. I hold a PhD in Asian, African, and Mediterranean Studies (Philological and Literary Studies) from the University of Naples “L’Orientale,” as well as MAs in Philosophy and Philology. My research combines philology, codicology, history,

and the study of interreligious encounters, and has been presented at conferences across Europe and published with De Gruyter. Dance has always been my second language. From classical ballet to Arabic and Sufi dance, I study how gestures carry memory, culture, and symbolism. Flamenco, which I studied in Andalusia, has been a turning point, revealing the living intersection of Arab and Spanish worlds—a space of rhythm, resilience, and devotion. I collaborate with writers and musicians to bring literature to life on stage, such as Dancing from East to West and Il pellegrinaggio della voce, performed during a seminar on Arabic literature at the University of Naples “L’Orientale.”

As a speaker, I have presented works including Aljamiado: l’abbraccio tra il mondo arabo e la Spagna, La huella árabe en el flamenco, El Sacromonte entre el flamenco y los libros Plumbeos, and Judit: el poder de invertir la mirada at the Escuela de Estudios Árabes (CSIC, Granada). Across both research and performance, my guiding intuition is to weave bridges between scholarship and artistic expression, allowing the Mediterranean’s written and danced memories to meet, converse, and come alive. ✨
