One Welfare One Welfare - recognising that animal welfare, biodiversity and the environment are connected to human wellbeing.

In a similar way to the relationship between animal and human health, there is a strong link between good animal and human welfare. One Welfare helps highlighting the direct and indirect benefits of animal protection to human welfare. One Welfare encompasses a multidisciplinary range of areas where different professions and disciplines can work together to achieve common goals and improve both human and animal wellbeing: for example, reduction
in animal and human abuse; more efficient disciplinary approaches across government departments; improved life chances; improved livestock and farmer welfare; improved animal welfare and food safety, food security and resilience; and positive impacts between improved conservation and human wellbeing.

From the conference room to the farm 🌍🐾

This summer, Dr Rebeca García Pinillos shared the latest updates to the One Welfare approach at the WOAH Animal Welfare Focal Points meeting in Budapest, Hungary.

The discussions explored how animal welfare connects with human wellbeing, communities and the environment — and how recognising those connections can help turn knowledge into meaningful action.

The programme also offered the opportunity to see animal welfare in practice through farm visits and conversations beyond the meeting room.

A valuable few days of exchange, learning and connection — and another opportunity to bring One Welfare into international animal welfare conversations.

Some encounters stay with you long after you walk away.

Watching this magnificent octopus in such a small space was one of them. I found it heartbreaking. I cried while recording it.

There is something deeply unsettling about being captivated by an animal’s beauty, movement and presence, while at the same time questioning the conditions in which they live.

Welfare is not simply about being alive. It is also about having opportunities to move, play, explore, express natural behaviours and experience the world around us. About positive experiences.

Sometimes One Welfare begins with something very simple:

Looking.

Looking again.

And asking ourselves how what we are seeing makes us feel — and why.

🐄☕ **“Cappuccino cows”… but is there really such a thing?**

We spotted this advert at Paddington and it made us pause.

Behind every cappuccino is much more than milk: there are cows, farmers, rural communities, food systems and the environment—all closely connected.

Catchy labels may grab our attention, but **One Welfare invites us to look beyond the cup and consider the whole story.**

Because the wellbeing of animals, people and the planet cannot be separated.

This week, our Founder and Director, Dr Rebeca García Pinillos, returned to the Burgos Congress Ambassadors Awards as a 2023 award recipient and part of the ambassadors family.

Her recognition followed the IV One Welfare World Conference, which brought together science, art, tradition and global dialogue to explore the connections between animal welfare, human wellbeing and the environment — made possible thanks to the organising committee, keynote speakers, contributors and participants who helped bring it to life.

Congratulations to this year’s awardees — Elena Vicente Domingo, Tomás Fisac and Rosana Gutiérrez Manzanero — for this well-deserved recognition.

Thank you to and Congress Office for the invitation and for continuing to position Burgos as a city of knowledge, collaboration and international connection.

From Burgos to the world — here’s to many more shared projects ahead.

A century ago, women had to fight for the right to enter professions that shape society — including law, science, veterinary medicine and public life.

This week, Dr Rebeca Garcia Pinillos was honoured to attend an event at the UK Parliament celebrating 10 years since the unveiling of the first female statue in Parliament Square.

Surrounded by women continuing to open doors for others, the moment was a powerful reminder that visibility matters. When women are represented in leadership, science, law, veterinary medicine and advocacy, future generations can imagine themselves there too.

At One Welfare, we believe that creating a fairer future for people, animals and the environment requires inclusive leadership, diverse voices and the courage to challenge barriers across every field.

The pioneers before us opened doors.
The next 100 years depends on how widely we hold them open.

They are designed to be two easy-to-read, enjoyable and informative pages for all those interested in One Welfare, helping to share research, news and projects while highlighting the interconnected pillars of the One Welfare framework.

This One Welfare Moment explores the integrated system of camelid livestock farming and agriculture in northern Chile’s High Andean and Pre-Andean territories, showing how camelids can support animal welfare, food security, cultural heritage, environmental sustainability and local livelihoods.

World Vet Day may have passed, but the work of veterinarians continues every day.

Featuring Dr. Rebeca García Pinillos — founder of One Welfare CIC and creator of the One Welfare Framework — during the 41st World Veterinary Association Congress in Tokyo. It was inspiring to see these themes reflected throughout the Congress, as colleagues from around the world came together to share knowledge, experiences, and solutions to global challenges.

From animal welfare and public health to food systems, biodiversity, conservation, and research, veterinary professionals play a vital role in advancing both One Health and One Welfare — recognising the interconnected wellbeing of animals, people, and the environment.

Veterinarians are not only advocates for animal health and welfare, but also key contributors to sustainable communities, food security, environmental stewardship, and global health resilience.

Because animal welfare, veterinary wellbeing, One Health, and One Welfare are not just for one day — they matter every day.
