✨ Thank you to everyone who joined us last Friday! ✨

We had an incredible session at together with our friends from and , co-designing the future makerspace at the library for the project in Barcelona. 💡

It was a truly collaborative moment — neighbors, librarians, designers, makers (and more!) coming together to imagine how libraries can become new spaces for making, learning, and sharing.
Your ideas and participation are helping shape what this new makerspace will become. 🌍💫

This is just the beginning — thank you for being part of the journey!

Revalue Local Textiles: How stories breathe life into forgotten fabrics

It was in a carefully stacked pile of fabrics in the back of a deadstock warehouse: a thick deep blue cotton fabric with a white floral pattern and a soft, sturdy weave. “These were made to cover mattresses during the 70s in Spain,” the owner told me. “Strong enough to last for decades. But the trend passed, and now they sit here, unused.”

The uniqueness of the fabrics print was what stood out to me. Now left behind its value wasn’t in what it was meant for, but in what it can still become.

Revalue Local Textiles: How stories breathe life into forgotten fabrics, explores how local discarded fabrics in the global north can be reevaluated using research, fieldwork, and crafts. You’ll find recent data on the textile value chain, personal encounters with global and local stakeholders, and five practical design outcomes made from secondhand materials, from a bag made of a pillowcase to a memory-stitched artwork.

Whether you’re looking to source secondhand textiles, build community around making, or simply see what design research can look like in action, this one’s for you

🌍 Today is Earth Overshoot Day – the day we’ve used up more resources than the planet can regenerate in a year. It’s a powerful reminder that we need new ways of thinking, making, and living.

📚 That’s where make-a-thek comes in: we’re turning public libraries into community spaces for sustainable fashion, crafts, repair, and circular practices.

📍 We’re excited to announce the partner libraries where new, modular makerspaces will open starting in early 2026:
🇧🇪 Antwerp – Permeke Library
🇪🇸 Barcelona – Biblioteca Camp de l’Arpa-Caterina Albert
🇩🇪 Berlin – VÖBB- Berlin library network
🇭🇺 Budapest – Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library
🇫🇮 Helsinki – Helsinki City Library
🇮🇹 Milan – Milan City Library Network
🇮🇸 Reykjavík – Reykjavik City Library
🇵🇱 Opole – Municipal Public Library
🇸🇮 Kranj – Kranj City Library
🇺🇦 Kyiv – Hryhorii Skovoroda Central District Library
🇺🇦 Zaporizhzhia – City Public Library System

🌍 Plus: at least 3 international libraries & a mobile makerspace bus for flexible, on-the-go workshops 🚌

🔧 All resources we develop – from toolkits to guides – will be open source, so others can build their own make-a-theks too.

OUR STORY

AN EXCHANGE AND NETWORKING HUB FOR THE EUROPEAN MAKER MOVEMENT

The Distributed Design Market Platform is a four-year project funded by the European Union through the Creative Europe fund. It acts as an exchange and networking hub for the European Maker Movement. It consists of both online and offline activities such as events, resources, workshops, fairs and bootcamps that promote and advocate for emerging creative talent in Europe and their business productivity and sustainability. With events across Europe the Platform also supports the mobility of emerging creatives and their work.

Maker Movement + Digitisation of Design = Distributed Design

Distributed Design is one outcome of the intersection of two global trends: the Maker Movement and the digitisation of the design discipline. A new market is rising, in which creative individuals have access to digital tools that allow them to design, produce and fabricate products themselves. We call this Distributed Design!
