The current Immaculate Conception Church building on Beach Street in Revere, Massachusetts is a welcoming, functional architectural fixture of the local parish campus. While earlier generations of the mission met in modest wooden structures, today’s active parish complex integrates the modern worship space alongside its neighboring community school and institutional grounds. Outside on the landscaped grounds, an historic bell and a prominent outdoor cross display serve as focal points for parishioners and visitors passing by.

We continued exploring new churches in Metropolitan Boston. Established in the 1890s to serve the hardworking Irish and Italian immigrant butchers and railroad workers of Lower Allston, St. Anthony of Padua Church has spent well over a century serving as a spiritual anchor for the neighborhood. Over the generations, the parish has beautifully mirrored the changing face of Boston’s immigrant communities, transitioning from its early European roots into a vibrant, multi-cultural spiritual home that today warmly embraces a large and active Brazilian and Portuguese-speaking congregation alongside its English-speaking parishioners. Churches we Know. Exploring Revere, Massachusetts. Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Revere, established in 1904 to serve Italian immigrants, grew rapidly and dedicated its grand, historic building in 1926, which is affectionately known as the Basilica on Revere Street. Architecturally celebrated for its striking scale and detailed hand-carved woodwork, the church grounds also feature notable outdoor statues, including a prominent likeness of Saint Anthony holding the Christ Child, Virgin Mary and Christopher Columbus along with a community little free library near the walkways that invites neighbors to share books. We found this book “33 days of miracles, wonders, and grace” that we read years ago. It is a blessings to recognize our daily miracles. Now we are going to share the landmarks mentioned inside.

Chapels we Know in Massachusetts. Churches we Know. The MIT Chapel was created as a non-denominational sanctuary to serve the spiritual needs of the entire campus. Architecturally, it is an iconic mid-century modern windowless brick cylinder resting on low arches inside a shallow moat of water, which reflects natural light onto the undulating interior brick walls. The chapel regularly hosts services for various traditions, including Catholic masses organized by the MIT Tech Catholic Community. It was open and were able to discover the altar and the connection to the sky, heaven, and God.

Churches we Know. At St. Joseph Catholic Church in Medford, the stained glass windows positioned around the altar and along the sides of the church trace a deliberate theological progression through salvation history and the life of Christ.
Above the Altar
The two primary windows positioned directly above and to the left and right of the altar establish a clear Old-to-New Testament connection regarding the Eucharist:
* Window 1 (Left of Altar): Depicts the Old Testament priest and king of Salem, Melchizedek. He is shown offering bread, wine, and a blessing to Abraham after his military victory. This scene serves as a direct prefiguration of the Eucharist.
* Window 2 (Right of Altar): Depicts the Last Supper, capturing Jesus telling His apostles, “This is my body... This is my blood,” instituting the first Eucharist directly above the modern altar where the sacrifice is re-presented.
Along the Sides (Transept and Walls)
Moving outward from the sanctuary, the side windows unfold the narrative of Christ’s life, ministry, and passion:
* Windows 3 & 4 (Transept): Situated on opposite sides of the transept, these transition the narrative into the early life of Christ, beginning with the Nativity scene featuring Mary, Joseph, and the adoring shepherds beneath the proclamation of the angels.
* The Side Walls (South and North): The lateral walls house windows moving chronologically through key moments of Jesus’ ministry—such as the young Jesus finding His voice among the rabbis in the temple, the Wedding Feast at Cana, and the establishment of church leadership—before moving into the Passion sequence.
* The Passion & Triumph: The side windows continue through the sorrow of the Crucifixion (with Mary and John), the Resurrection with Christ rising from an alabaster sarcophagus, and the Ascension.
Finally, a prominent circular window sits high above the rear choir loft, depicting Christ as the triumphant “Lord of all Lords, and King of all Kings” in royal garments.

August 9, 1945. Today marks 81 years since the atomic bomb fell on Nagasaki, forever altering history and leaving an unforgettable scar on humanity. Artifacts like the charred head of the Urakami Cathedral’s Virgin Mary stand as quiet, powerful reminders of the devastating human cost of war. Remembering this day is essential to making sure we keep building a future centered on peace, especially as we walk the Routes for Global Peace to connect communities worldwide in shared remembrance and hope.
