🔹 Supplier Approval & Monitoring
Washing alone should never be considered a guaranteed control for Cyclospora.
Food safety starts long before the product reaches the factory.

🥬 Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce — what should food businesses learn from it?
U.S. health authorities investigated cases of Cyclosporiasis associated with consumption of iceberg lettuce, with recalls involving products connected to the incident.
Cyclospora cayetanensis is an intestinal parasite that can be transmitted through contaminated fresh produce or water, making fresh-produce incidents particularly challenging from a food-safety perspective.
🎯 The important lesson isn’t only the recall. It’s what the incident tells us to review.
🔹 Strengthen Supplier Approval & Monitoring for higher-risk agricultural products.
🔹 Evaluate the source and quality of water used during growing, washing and handling.
🔹 Review contamination risks during harvesting, handling & transportation.
🔹 Ensure your Hazard Analysis considers relevant parasitic hazards—not only Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria.
🔹 Maintain effective Traceability & Recall Readiness for rapid response when an outbreak emerges.
And one important point:
Washing alone should never be considered a guaranteed control for Cyclospora.
For fresh products without an effective kill step, preventing contamination throughout the supply chain becomes far more important than trying to remove it at the end of the process.
Food safety starts long before the product reaches the factory.
