Imagine with me that you are in your house minding your own business and maybe watching TV, you want to grab the remote only to see that you can’t control your hand. Your hand starts to move randomly WITHOUT YOUR WILL. Is it a ghost that possessed you? Are you stuck in a dream? Or is it simply a neurological disorder? A similar occasion was reported with a 77-year-old when her left hand got out of her own control and started stroking her hair and pulling her hair.

Alien hand syndrome 👽 or Dr.Strangelove syndrome is a rare neurological condition that affects one of the hands and can sometimes affect either of the legs🦵🏼, though it’s not as common. With this syndrome, the hand is uncontrollable and moves as if it has a mind of its own. It usually affects the left hand or the nondominant hand. It usually happens in adults but it can affect children as well.

As obvious as it seems, the only symptom is the inability to control your hand. In other words, if you were to ever experience that, your hand would start moving without cognitive control or awareness and it might even start opening or closing things. The gestures that happen when you have a seizure can be fairly dangerous. Some cases reported that their alien hand hurt them while having one of the seizures.

The syndrome can be developed after having a stroke, trauma, or tumors. It’s linked to brain surgeries that separate the two hemispheres of the brain. Thus, brain scans show that the affected people have isolated activities in the contralateral primary motor area. Unfortunately, this is uncurable.

Now that you know about this bizarre syndrome, the next time you hit one of your friends try to tell him that you have alien hand syndrome instead of saying that you were killing a bug.

تخيل معي أنك في منزلك تهتم بشؤونك الخاصة وربما تشاهد التلفزيون ، و أنت تريد الامساك بجهاز التحكم عن بعد فقط لترى أنه لا يمكنك التحكم في يدك. تبدأ يدك في التحرك بشكل عشوائي دون إرادتك. هل هو الشبح تلبسك؟ هل أنت عالق في الحلم؟ أم أنه مجرد اضطراب عصبي؟ تم الإبلاغ عن حالة مماثلة من سيدة تبلغ من العمر 77 عاما عندما خرجت يدها اليسرى عن سيطرتها وبدأت في سحب شعرها.

It’s 1973 in Stockholm, Sweden, and a sudden robbery incident takes place in one of the banks. All of the employees were held as hostages and the situation continued for six whole days until the police could finally interfere and break the standoff.

Shockingly, the employees had sympathy toward their kidnappers and refused to testify against them. This small incident made everybody wonder how they sympathized with the robbers and defended them.

From that incident, a criminologist and psychiatrist came up with the name “Stockholm Syndrome”.
In simple words, Stockholm syndrome is a coping mechanism that the brain of the victim develops during intense situations of abuse and hurt to comfort itself. That obviously allows the person to develop positive feelings, such as sympathy or even love and affection, toward the abuser instead of negative ones, such as hatred and fear.

Up to this point, researchers don’t know exactly why some captives develop the syndrome while others don’t but there have been some theories. One of them says that such situations are highly charged with feelings and that’s why victims deal with it differently according to their mindset.

The syndrome is typically recognized more in kidnapper-hostage situations but it might also involve any type of other traumatic events such as child abuse or relationship abuse.

It might seem like you’re hearing about this for the first time and you might have even said to yourself: “What type of a fool would fall in love with their kidnapper or even sympathize with them?!”. My dear, with all due respect, but you once were that fool. Many of you, if not all, have seen the famous Disney movie (Beauty and The Beast).

The movie tells the story of the young and selfish prince who is cursed to become a hideous monster until his heart learns how to love. It also tells the story of the very beautiful and young Belle who is known in her small village as the prettiest but also the weirdest of them all because she is always reading. Their paths have crossed when the monster decided to hold her hostage instead of her father and as the story progresses, they fall in love with each other; isn’t that adorable? As a child, you never saw that as an issue; what’s the problem if a young girl such as Belle falls in love with a monster who has repeatedly mistreated her and is, in fact, her CAPTOR?! Next time you watch the movie, try and see it from that point of view and decide whether it’s reasonable to fall in love with your captor or not.

إنه عام 1973 في ستوكهولم، السويد، ووقعت حادثة سطو مفاجئة في أحد البنوك. تم احتجاز جميع الموظفين كرهائن واستمر الوضع لمدة ستة أيام كاملة حتى تتمكن الشرطة في النهاية من التدخل وكسر المواجهة.

المثير للصدمة أن الموظفين تعاطفوا مع خاطفيهم ورفضوا الشهادة ضدهم. هذا الحادث الصغير جعل الجميع يتساءل كيف تعاطفوا مع اللصوص ودافعوا عنهم.

من تلك الحادثة، ابتكر عالم إجرام وطبيب نفسي اسم «متلازمة ستوكهولم».
بعبارة بسيطة، متلازمة ستوكهولم هي آلية تأقلم يطورها دماغ الضحية أثناء المواقف الشديدة من الإساءة والأذى لتهدئة نفسه. من الواضح أن هذا يسمح للشخص بتطوير مشاعر إيجابية، مثل التعاطف أو حتى الحب والمودة، تجاه المعتدي بدلاً من المشاعر السلبية، مثل الكراهية والخوف.

حتى هذه اللحظة، لا يعرف الباحثون بالضبط سبب إصابة بعض الضحايا بالمتلازمة بينما لا يصاب البعض الآخر ولكن كانت هناك بعض النظريات. يقول أحدهم إن مثل هذه المواقف مشحونة بشدة بالمشاعر ولهذا السبب يتعامل الضحايا معها بشكل مختلف وفقًا لعقليتهم. عادة ما يتم التعرف على المتلازمة بشكل أكبر في حالات الخاطف والرهائن ولكنها قد تنطوي أيضًا على أي نوع من الأحداث الصادمة الأخرى مثل إساءة معاملة الأطفال.

قد يبدو أنك تسمع عن هذا لأول مرة وربما تكون قد قلت لنفسك: «أي نوع من الحمقي سيقع في حب خاطفه أو حتى يتعاطف معه ؟!» عزيزي، مع كامل احترامي، لكنك كنت ذلك الأحمق ذات مرة. شاهد الكثير منكم، إن لم يكن جميعكم، فيلم ديزني الشهير (الجميلة والوحش).

يحكي الفيلم قصة الأمير الشاب والأناني الذي يُلعن ليصبح وحشًا بشعًا حتى يتعلم قلبه كيف يحب. كما أنه يروي قصة الحسناء الجميلة والشابة التي تُعرف في قريتها الصغيرة بأنها الأجمل ولكنها أيضًا أغربهم جميعًا لأنها تقرأ دائمًا. لقد تقابلت مساراتهم عندما قرر الوحش أن يحتجزها كرهينة بدلاً من والدها ومع تقدم القصة، يقعان في حب بعضهما البعض ؛ أليس هذا رائعاً ؟ عندما كنت طفلاً، لم تر ذلك على أنه مشكلة ؛ ما المشكلة إذا وقعت فتاة صغيرة مثل بيل في حب وحش أساء معاملتها مرارًا وتكرارًا وهو في الواقع خاطفها؟! في المرة القادمة التي تشاهد فيها الفيلم، حاول مشاهدته من وجهة النظر هذه وقرر ما إذا كان من المعقول الوقوع في حب آسرك أم لا.

🧠Neuroscience is the study of how the nervous system develops, its structure, and what it does. Not only is neuroscience concerned with the normal functioning of the nervous system, but also with what happens to the nervous system when people have neurological, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental disorders.

🧠The brain mechanism and function were unknown for a long period of time; Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, had a theory that the brain was a blood-cooling mechanism.
The ancient Greeks were among the first people to study the brain. They attempted to understand the role of the brain and how it worked and to explain neural disorders.

🧠Pierre Paul Broca (1824-1880) concluded that different regions in the brain were involved in specific functions.

🧠In the 19th century, von Helmholtz, a German physician and physicist, measured the speed at which nerve cells produced electrical impulses.

🧠In 1873, Gamillo Golgi, an Italian physician, pathologist, and scientist, used silver chromate salt to see what neurons looked like.

🧠Early in the 20th century, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, a Spanish pathologist, histologist, and neuroscientist, hypothesized that the neurons are independent nerve cell units.
In 1906, Golgi and Cajal jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work and categorization of neurons in the brain.

🧠Since the 1950s, research and practice in modern neurology have made great strides, leading to developments in the treatment of stroke, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), and other conditions.

🧠Scientific developments have enabled neuroscientists to study the nervous system’s structure, functions, development, abnormalities, and ways it can be altered. Research and exploration in neuroscience continues until more and more startling facts are revealed🔍.
