PROFIBUS Standard: Terminations

- The beginning and the end of PROFIBUS Segment must be terminated, or it will cause signal reflections that may result in intermittent failures on the bus.

- If the termination occurs before the end of the segment, the devices after the termination will be lost when using modern connectors.

- A PROFIBUS DP termination circuit requires a 5 VDC to operate correctly. The 5 VDC comes from device that the PROFIBUS connector or cable is connected to.

- If the device is unpowered, it is like the termination does not exist.

Best Practice

- Enable termination at the beginning and end of each segment and nowhere else!

- Ensure that both terminations are powered.

- Consider the use of active terminators instead of terminating on a PROFIBUS DP slave

why is the grounding important for Engines?!

- Proper grounding for vessel and engine electrical systems is necessary for proper performance and reliability.

- Improper grounding will cause uncontrolled and unreliable circuit paths.

- This can result in damage to the engine’s crankshaft main bearings, crankshaft journal surfaces or other engine components, and can cause electrical activity which may degrade the boat’s electronics and electrical
communication equipment.
