Chapter 4
The Château d’If stood in the middle of the sea, dark and frightening. Its high stone walls were stronger than storms and waves.
وقفت قلعة شاتو ديف في وسط البحر، مظلمة ومخيفة. كانت جدرانها الحجرية العالية أقوى من العواصف والأمواج.
Sailors feared it deeply because prisoners sent there disappeared forever. No one returned, and the place was known as a prison of despair.
خاف البحارة منها بشدة، لأن السجناء الذين يُرسَلون إليها يختفون للأبد. لم يعد أحد، وكان المكان معروفًا كسجن لليأس.
Inside, Edmond Dantès was trapped. Damp stone walls, salty air, and the endless roar of waves became his sad and lonely world.
في الداخل، حُبس إدموند دانتيس. أصبحت الجدران الحجرية الرطبة، والهواء المالح، ودوي الأمواج المستمر عالمه الحزين والوحيد.
Days and nights looked the same. He counted stones, traced cracks, and dreamed that Monsieur Morrel or Mercédès might still save him.
كانت الأيام والليالي متشابهة. كان يعد الحجارة، ويتتبع الشقوق، ويحلم أن موريل أو مرسيدس قد ينقذانه.
No one came. Guards laughed at his cries of innocence. Hunger and loneliness crushed him until he thought it was better to die.
لم يأت أحد. كان الحراس يضحكون من صرخاته بالبراءة. سحقه الجوع والوحدة، حتى ظن أن الموت أفضل.
One night, he heard a faint scratching under the floor. At first, he thought of rats, but the sound was deliberate and steady.
ليلة ما، سمع خدشًا خافتًا تحت الأرض. في البداية ظنه فئرانًا، لكن الصوت كان مقصودًا وثابتًا.
He tapped on the stone with broken pottery. The sound replied faster. Hope filled his heart—he was not completely alone anymore.
طرق على الحجر بقطعة فخار مكسورة. رد الصوت أسرع. ملأ الأمل قلبه—لم يعد وحيدًا تمامًا بعد الآن.
After weeks of digging, Edmond saw another man's face—aged, wise, with bright eyes. It was Abbé Faria, a prisoner like him.
بعد أسابيع من الحفر، رأى إدموند وجه رجل آخر—عجوز، حكيم، بعينين لامعتين. كان الأب فاريا، سجينًا مثله.
Faria told Edmond how he had dug for years to escape but reached his cell instead. Still, he was glad to find a friend.
أخبر فاريا إدموند كيف حفر سنوات ليهرب لكنه وصل لزنزانته بدلاً من الجدار. ومع ذلك، فرح لأنه وجد صديقًا.
In the dark prison, Faria taught Edmond languages, history, geography, and science. Edmond’s mind grew sharper each day with new knowledge.
في السجن المظلم، علم فاريا إدموند اللغات والتاريخ والجغرافيا والعلوم. أصبح عقل إدموند أكثر حدة كل يوم بالمعرفة الجديدة.
Faria also revealed a secret treasure hidden on Monte Cristo island. He made Edmond promise to use it with justice, not greed.
كشف فاريا أيضًا عن كنز سري مخبأ في جزيرة مونت كريستو. جعل إدموند يعد باستخدامه للعدل لا للطمع.
Faria became sick with violent seizures. Before dying, he gave Edmond a map and whispered: "Remember Monte Cristo, your hope and freedom."
مرض فاريا بنوبات عنيفة. وقبل موته، أعطى إدموند خريطة وهمس: "تذكر مونت كريستو، أملك وحريتك."
