Red-cheeked pipefish dads are all-in when it comes to bringing up their babies. Like their relatives, the seahorses and seadragons, male pipefish brood their eggs in a pouch to hatching. Bright red patches behind their eyes distinguish this underwater chameleon that changes its body colour to match its environment, blending with the coral, rock, or seagrass of their shallow coastal homes, and to communicate with each other.

Bowmouth guitarfish are on the brink of extinction.
“Shark-like rays” like these fetch a high price on the international fin market, and their meat is eaten locally. Their overfishing needs urgent intervention.
In Taiwan, and Wei-Chuan Chiang are tracking where wedgefishes and guitarfishes (like this bowmouth) go, to identify their critical habitats. When we know where they mate, feed, and give birth, we can protect them from targeted fishing and bycatch at the most vulnerable stages of their lives.
