Contractions shorten words like "he is" to "he's," but in OET writing, they signal informality and can lower your score. Official OET guidance stresses avoiding them entirely for the professional tone required in letters to healthcare colleagues.

Why Avoid in OET
OET Writing assesses genre and style, favoring formal language in referral or discharge letters. Contractions like "she's" or "didn't" make text conversational, unfit for professional communication where full forms such as "she is" or "did not" maintain respect and clarity. Examiners penalize this as it disrupts the expected polite, non-judgmental register.

Examples
Use these to practice switching forms:

Informal (Avoid) Formal (Use)
Informal (Avoid) Formal (Use)
He's keen to return home. He is keen to return home.
She's looking forward to her baby. She is looking forward to holding her baby.
She didn't follow the plan. She did not follow the care plan correctly.
Speaking Contrast
In OET Speaking, contractions like "I've" or "he's" suit natural dialogue with patients. Reserve full forms strictly for writing to hit high grammar and style bands
