Karneval war ursprünglich ein heidnisches Volksfest, das nach dem Winter den Übergang zum Frühling markierte. Eine Theorie besagt, dass so das Ende des Winters gefeiert und der Frühling begrüßt wurde. Man feierte, indem man aß, was vom Winter übrig geblieben war, um zu verhindern, dass die Lebensmittel während des großen Fastens verdarben. Das Tragen von Faschingskostümen und Karnevalsmasken hatte den Zweck, die bösen Wintergeister zu verjagen.
