Is there an apple in your lunchbox? 🍎
- We use ‘there is’ and ‘there are’ to show the existence of something.
- Use ‘there is’ for singular nouns and ‘there are’ for plural nouns.
- Use ‘some’/‘any’ + plural nouns.
- Change ‘some’ ➡️ ‘any’ in negatives and questions.
- Don’t contract ‘there is’ in short answers:
e.g. ✅ ‘Yes there is.’ NOT ‘Yes there’s.’ ❌

Have you heard of crutch words? 💭 English is full of them!
Crutch words are filler words that people use when they speak, to give them time to think or pause.
Words such as ‘like’, ‘actually’, ‘basically’, ‘honestly’ and ‘well’ are all crutch words. Examples are:
Well, I’m interested in reading a book on skiing in Austria.
Actually, I’m not sure what I’m doing this weekend.
Basically, I’ve been living alone for four years.
Use them sparingly in your speaking exams to sound more natural!
