💊 5 Medications & Supplements That Can Affect Laboratory Test Results
① Biotin (Vitamin B7)
May interfere with certain immunoassays, including:
Thyroid function tests (TSH, Free T4, Free T3)
Cardiac Troponin
Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)
Vitamin D
Various hormone assays
⚠️ The degree of interference depends on the biotin dose and the assay platform used.
② Corticosteroids (e.g., Prednisone)
May cause:
⬆️ Blood glucose
⬆️ White blood cell count (especially neutrophils)
⬇️ Eosinophil count
💡 Always interpret laboratory results in the context of corticosteroid therapy.
③ Diuretics
May affect:
Sodium (Na⁺)
Potassium (K⁺)
Magnesium (Mg²⁺)
Uric Acid
⚠️ The effect varies depending on the type of diuretic (loop, thiazide, or potassium-sparing).
④ Statins
May increase:
Creatine Kinase (CK)
Occasionally AST & ALT (particularly if muscle injury occurs)
💡 An elevated CK level does not always indicate myocardial infarction.
⑤ Warfarin
Directly affects:
Prothrombin Time (PT)
International Normalized Ratio (INR)
💡 These tests are routinely used to monitor warfarin therapy and adjust dosage.
⚠️ Important Reminder
Never stop or change your medication before a blood test unless instructed by your healthcare provider. Always inform your healthcare provider and the laboratory staff about all medications and supplements you are taking.
