اضطرابات التوحد هي الحالات التي يواجه فيها الأشخاص صعوبة في تطوير العلاقات الاجتماعية العادية، أو استخدام اللغة بشكل طبيعي، أو يعجزون عن استخدامها بشكل مطلق، ويُظهرون سلوكيات مقيَّدة أو تكرارية.

يعاني الكثير من المصابين بالتوحد من درجة ما من الإعاقة الذهنية (معدل ذكاء IQ أقل من 70).ويتفاوت أداؤهم بشكل كبير.وعادة ما يكون أداؤهم أفضل في اختبارات المهارات الحركية والاستيعاب الفراغي، وذلك بالمقارنة مع الاختبارات اللفظية.يمتلك بعض المصابين بالتوحد مهارات ذاتية التعلم أو فريدة، مثل القدرة على القيام بعمليات حسابية معقدة، أو امتلاك مهارات موسيقية متقدمة.ولكن للأسف، كثيرًا ما يعجز هؤلاء الأشخاص عن توظيف مهاراتهم بطريقة تفاعلية أو مثمرة اجتماعيًا.

لا تزال الأسباب النوعية لاضطرابات التوحد غير مفهومة بشكل كامل، على الرغم من أنها غالبًا ما تتصل بعوامل جينية.في حال وجود طفل في العائلة مصاب بالتوحد، فإن خطر ولادة طفل آخر مُصاب بالتوحد يبلغ 3 إلى 10%.قد ترتبط العديد من العوامل الجينية مثل متلازمة الصبغي X الهش، و معقد التصلب الحدبي، و متلازمة داون، مع الإصابة باضطرابات طيف التوحد.
