Steps to Teach Vocabulary for Primary Students
1️⃣ Introduce the Word
Use real objects, flashcards, or pictures (TPR – Total Physical Response works great).
Say the word slowly and clearly.
Have the class repeat (choral + individual repetition).
- Example: Show an apple and say, “This is an apple. Say: apple.”
2️⃣ Give Meaning in a Simple Way
Use gestures, drawings, or very short sentences.
Avoid long explanations.
- Example: “An apple is a fruit. We eat it. It’s sweet.”
3️⃣ Practice Recognition
Games:
What’s missing? (hide one flashcard, kids guess).
Point to… (“Point to the cat!”).
Flashcard race (show a card quickly, students shout the word).
4️⃣ Practice Production
Ask students to use the word:
Yes/No questions: “Is this an apple?”
Simple sentences: “I like apples.”
Pair work: One student asks “What’s this?” the other answers.
5️⃣ Review & Recycle
Revisit the words every lesson (spiral review).
Use songs, chants, and short stories to repeat vocabulary naturally.
Integrate into classroom language: instead of saying “Open your book,” say “Show me your book!”

1. Presentation: Show flashcards of cat, dog, elephant.
2. Choral Repetition: “Cat, cat, cat.” → kids repeat.
3. Game: “Simon Says” with animal actions (“Simon says: bark like a dog!”).
4. Sentence Practice: “I have a cat.” → students make their own sentences.
5. Review: End with a chant: “Cat, dog, elephant!” while clapping hands.
