There —> indicates place
Example: The car is over [there].

Their —> the possessive form of “they”
Example: They are staying in a house, but it’s not [their] house.

They’re —> the contraction of “they are”
Example: They are going to school. [They’re] ready to get on the bus.

Your —> the possessive form of “you”
Example: Wear [your] scarf; it’s very cold outside.

You’re —> the contraction of “you are”
Example: [You’re] very intelligent.

Its —> the possessive form of “it”
Example: I love Paris and [its] wonderful streets.

It’s —> the contraction form of “it is”
Example: [It’s] a very interesting course.

Pearls of wisdom:

“i” before “e”, except after “c”.

يعني إيه؟

يعني أي كلمة بييجي فيها حرف الi وحرف الe ورا بعض، عادة بتكون الi مكانها قبل الe.

لكن لو الكلمة فيها حرف الi وحرف الe ورا بعض وقبلهم علي طول حرف الc, يبقي في الحالة دي بتكون الe مكانها قبل الi.

طبعاً دي قاعدة عامة ولكل قاعدة شواذ لكن في الأغلب بيكون كده.

Example:

Believe (“i” before “e”)
Receive (except after “c”)

Common sentence structure problems:

من أكتر المشاكل اللي معظمنا بيواجهها أزمة الsentence structure. المشاكل ببساطة بتكون حاجة من ٣ حاجات...

1- Fragments
و دول بيكونوا جُمل ناقصة، في الأغلب فيها فاعل و مافيهاش فعل بيحاكي حاجة متعلقة بالفاعل. زي مثلاً ما أقول "البنت اللي بتروح الكلية." و اسكت. أول سؤال هيخطر في بالك "مالها؟🙄"

2- Run-on sentences
وده لما بتجمع جملتين بشكل مش صح. زي مثلاً ما أقول "الدكتور عمل العملية العيان مات". طبعاً حسيت أنك بتتاخد علي خوانة😂

3- Comma splices
ده لما بنستخدم الفصلة استخدام خاطئ فبتفصل بين جُمل كاملة كتير ملهمش علاقة ببعض أو كل واحدة فيهم مستقلة بذاتها. دي أكتر غلطة شائعة لأن استخدام الفصلة في الإنجليزي مش flexible زي العربي. زي مثلاً "الدكتور عمل العملية، العيان مات." ده في قواعد الإنجليزي علي عكس العربي بيكون run-on.

إيه الصح؟

الصح بيكون أننا نتأكد إن الجملة كاملة ولها معني مفهوم وإن مفيش جُمل كاملة كتير محشورة كلها في جملة واحدة حتي لو هنحط بينهم فصلات كتير.

Example:

1- Fragments: The girl who goes to college.

الحل نشيل "who” أو نكمل الجملة بفعل معين بيحاكي البنت و ده بنسميه predicate.

Correction:
The girl goes to college.
OR
The girl who goes to college is very smart.

2- Run-on sentences: The doctor performed the operation the patient died.

ونفسها كمان في ثالث مشكلة

3- Comma splices: The doctor performed the, operation the patient died.

الحل تتقسم جملتين بsemicolon أو يكونوا جملتين منفصلين كل واحدة بتنتهي بperiod أو إننا نضيف حرف عطف أو conjunction.

Correction:
The doctor performed the operation; the patient died.

OR

The doctor performed the operation. The patient died.

OR

After the doctor performed the operation, the patient died.

يعني إيه؟
زي السرقة بالظبط بس من الناحية الأكاديمية. بنكتب كلام أو أفكار شخص تاني اللي قالها من غير ما ننسبها له.

ايه المشكلة؟
ببساطة شديدة وبالمنطق، حط نفسك مكانه/مكانها😂

ازاي منعملش كده لو احنا عايزين نذكر الكلام ده أو الأفكار دي؟

1- Quoting —> saying someone’s words as they are. In this case you put the words between quotation marks and mention the person’s name.

2- Paraphrasing —> referring to someone’s ideas, but putting them in your own words. In that case, you mention the person’s name, but you do not need the quotation marks.

Example:

Quoting

Simone de Beauvoir believes that “one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman”.

Paraphrasing

According to Simone de Beauvoire, gender roles are socially constructed rather than inherent.

الجملتين دول بيدوا نفس المعني، إن الإنسان أو المرأة بالأخص تصرفاتها وشخصيتها ورؤيتها لذاتها وللي حواليها بتتشكل حسب ما أملاه عليها المجتمع اللي هي عايشة فيه.
كل جملة فيهم مكتوبة بصيغة مختلفة، لكن في الحالتين وصلنا نفس المعني وتفادينا مشكلة الplagiarism أو السرقة الأدبية.

When to use a semicolon

A semicolon is used to join two independent clauses as one sentence.

يعني إيه؟
يعني لو عايزين نقول حاجتين منفصلين ممكن كل واحدة تتقال في جملة لوحدها لكن احنا عايزين نقولهم في جملة واحدة عشان هما ليهم علاقة ببعض.

نعرف ازاي إن ممكن نقول كل جملة لوحدها؟
نحط بعد كل واحدة period أو نقطة، ونشوف ليها معني ومفهومة ولا لأ.

Example:
—I have an exam tomorrow. I cannot go to the party tonight.

هنا كل جملة ليها معني مفهوم ومظبوطة grammatically.

بما إن الجملتين لهم علاقة ببعض أو واحدة منهم نتيجة للثانية، ممكن نستخدم الsemicolon عشان نربط ما بينهم.
