Visual schedules are powerful tools because they give children clarity, structure, and a sense of calm throughout the day.
They increase predictabilityโ€”something children rely on, especially those with speech and language difficulties.

When a child can see whatโ€™s coming next, transitions become smoother, anxiety decreases, and behavior improves.

They also enhance communication.
Seeing a visual while hearing instructions strengthens understanding and supports language development.

๐Ÿ“š Research shows toddlers learn new words more effectively when language activities are embedded in predictable routines.

Visual schedules improve attention too.
When a child knows what to expect, itโ€™s easier for them to stay focused.
Personalizing schedules with motivating pictures or real photos makes them even more engaging.

Some behaviors happen because the child is seeking sensory input or internal stimulation. These behaviors feel calming, enjoyable, or help the child regulate when they are overwhelmed or dysregulated.

๐—˜๐˜…๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€:
โ€ข Hand-flapping
โ€ข Rocking back and forth
โ€ข Spinning
โ€ข Bouncing their leg

When the behavior happens across all settings โ€” with or without people, demands, or items โ€” and the behavior itself is the reward.

โญ How to reduce sensory behaviors:

โœ”๏ธ Provide sensory alternatives
Give the child a safe item to meet the sensory need.
Examples: fidget toys, stress balls, chewy tools, pop-its.

โœ”๏ธ Offer sensory breaks
Allow short breaks before the child becomes overwhelmed.
Examples: deep-pressure hugs, jumping breaks, stretching, calming corner.

โœ”๏ธ Modify the environment
Reduce sensory overload around the child.
Examples: dim lights, reduce noise, declutter the space, noise-cancelling headphones.

โœ”๏ธ Teach replacement behaviors
Show the child a more appropriate way to meet the same need.
Examples: asking for a break, squeezing a stress ball instead of flapping, chewing a chewy instead of clothing.

When we understand the WHYโ€ฆ
we can support the HOW.

Today, weโ€™re focusing on the second one: ๐—”๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป.

What is Attention?
Attention behavior happens when a child does something to get someone to look, respond, or interact with themโ€”whether the response is positive (smiling, laughing, praise) or negative (scolding or reacting strongly).

Examples of Attention behavior:
โ€ข Calling out
โ€ข Interrupting
โ€ข Doing something funny
โ€ข Doing something to get a reaction (like loud crying or throwing items)
โ€ข Sometimes the child may show self-injury or aggression as a way to gain attention.

The child may use these behaviors to communicate or ask for attention when they donโ€™t yet have another functional way.

How to reduce Attention behavior:
โ€ข Give attention to positive behaviors
โ€ข Teach simple, appropriate ways to ask for attention
โ€ข Reinforce positive communication.

Every child is unique, and challenging behaviors happen for different reasons.

Aggression is NOT a symptom of autism.
It often happens because of:

โ€ข Frustration
โ€ข Communication difficulties
โ€ข Sensory overload
โ€ข Changes in routine
โ€ข Escape from demands
โ€ข Wanting something

โญ The ABCs of Behavior

A โ€“ Antecedent: Before the behavior
B โ€“ Behavior: The behavior
C โ€“ Consequence: After the behavior

ABC helps us find patterns and triggers.

Behaviors happen for 4 main reasons:

1๏ธโƒฃ Escape

FBA tells us:

โ€ข What triggers the behavior
โ€ข Why it continues
โ€ข What the child gains or avoids

โญ How We Manage Aggression
