Democracy and academia has become increasingly pressured under the growing presence of autocratic leadership and their supporters within and without politics. This conference will explore the role and abilities of different academic groups to answer these threats to democracy and academic freedom.

The selection of abstracts for the 62nd Annual Conference of Societas Ethica (August 20–23, 2026, in Tartu, Estonia) has now been completed.
Together with our dedicated local partners and organisers, the board had its work cut out. Braving temperatures of –20°C on the way to the conference venue — the University of Tartu — the committee was met not only with snow, but with a veritable avalanche of submissions: thoughtful, critical, and inspiring abstracts of truly remarkable quality.
Societas Ethica extends its sincere thanks to all board members and partners for their commitment and careful deliberation. We very much look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be an engaging and high-level conference in August.

To get inspired, we invite you to an informal online meeting with Johann-Christian Põder, one of the conference hosts. He will give us some insights into the conference theme and share a bit about what to expect in Tartu.
We’ll also be joined by the Scriba of Societas Ethica, who will help us tackle the eternal question: What makes a great abstract? Together, they’ll answer your questions and offer practical tips on writing and submitting papers for the conference.
And of course, there will be time for your own ideas! If you already have a paper in mind, you’re warmly invited to pitch it and get early feedback from the group.

In a world shaped and challenged by overlapping, escalating crises –ecological, political, spiritual, and moral – the question of recovery has become a deeply ethical one.
How do communities remember, reconcile, and reimagine hope? What does it mean to act morally when the very signs and narratives, democratic structures and frameworks that once guided us are in flux and eroding?

Under the theme
»Crisis & Recovery: Ethics in Interdisciplinary Dialogue«
Societas Ethica invites scholars to explore the intersection of ethics, memory studies, and semiotics, at our 62nd Annual Conference 2026, held 20–23 August in Tartu, Estonia – traditions deeply rooted in Estonia’s intellectual life.

We welcome a wide range of possible contributions that enter this ethical dialogue from unique perspectives to think about trauma and reconciliation, the fragility of meaning and resilience, the threats of war, climate change and democratic collapse, and the moral imagination of renewal and dare to hope.

We accept submissions in English, French and German.
