What if the real innovation in education is not technology, but cooperation?

This week, a group of Estonian vocational education experts visited Zwolle to learn from our Dutch colleagues, as part of a study trip organized by Education Estonia in cooperation with the InseneriAkadeemia programme. What impressed us most was the way cooperation is built into the system. The connection between learners, schools and employers felt seamless and deeply embedded in everyday practice. Our delegation of Estonian vocational school leaders and teachers observed what could be implemented to their own institutions.

One example that stood out was Perron038 – an innovation hub in Zwolle where companies, schools and students work side by side on real manufacturing challenges. Seeing how naturally young talent and industry connect there was genuinely inspiring, and a great illustration of what "cooperation over technology" can look like in practice.

A sincere thank you to the entire Landstede MBO team for their warm hospitality, openness and willingness to share their experience. We hope these conversations will lead to new partnerships, joint projects and lasting cooperation between Estonian and Dutch education communities.

Estonian students remain among the world's best in PISA 2025.
The latest OECD PISA study confirms Estonia's position at the top of European education and among the world's leading education systems. Estonian students performed well above the OECD average in science, mathematics and reading.
The results highlight several strengths of Estonian education, including educational equity, student wellbeing, a strong growth mindset and supportive learning environments. At the same time, PISA also points to areas where further progress is needed.

Estonia's AI Leap programme is now eight months in, and the results are being watched closely — including by CNN International.

Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallas spoke with Quest Means Business about a pilot giving around 20,000 Estonian high schoolers access to a custom AI tool built with OpenAI. The real focus is: what happens to human thinking once AI becomes part of how students learn. So far, the signs are good. The first real research findings land in September, when the new school year starts.

The children at Tallinn Meelespea kindergarten were lucky to have international guests last week – because it meant they could rehearse their performance together before the VIPs – their mothers – arrive.
After that, the children got to drive a robot between the letters to find the letters of their mother’s name. The luckiest were those whose mothers had long names, because that meant they got to drive the robot for a longer time.
Sometimes people ask whether children also learn reading and math in Estonian kindergartens. They do — just in an integrated way and through play.

For the 9th year, Estonia is selecting its School of the Year (Aasta Kool) — but the real value of this contest is not the winner. It’s the process that matters. This initiative pushes schools to reflect and articulate their story:
– What makes us unique?
– Where are our strengths?
– What do we truly stand for?

How does the contest work? Schools submit a self-analysis, along with a video and photos. A 7-member jury evaluates the entries and selects the semi-finalists. The final winner is decided by public vote among the top three schools.
