Rehearsing Change Study Abroad

A study abroad/community empowerment program in Ecuadorian communities, carried out by the Pachaysana Institute and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito

A semester-long study abroad program that is part of a greater plan for community development, Rehearsing Change carries out the central mission of Pachaysana by empowering local communities while simultaneously educating global leaders. It is designed, administered and evaluated in partnership with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), who not only validates the international academic credit, but issues valuable certificates of completion to local community counterparts. Local counterparts and international students learn through a methodology of the Applied Arts (or Arts for Social Change). The combining of international students with local counterparts and our use of arts-based methodologies makes this a truly groundbreaking initiative. It is part of a movement toward the creation of a new field, “Applied Study Abroad.”

Building with What has Been Broken - https://mailchi.mp/42054bd4d1de/from-transaction-to-transformation-unlearning-the-act-of-giving-5858301

When life feels like it is crumbling, we must learn to build from what has fallen apart.

This month, we invite you to look around and ask: what is broken? What has been left behind? How can I see those pieces differently and rebuild something new?

The world is not falling apart - it is being replanted - https://mailchi.mp/2aaf7467d9eb/from-transaction-to-transformation-unlearning-the-act-of-giving-5857243

It can feel like we’re up against the world. But when children plant trees and elders share dreams at dawn, we remember: they are the world.

The Spring 2026 semester of Rehearsing Change has begun and we welcome new students into our ever changing intercultural community!

For Pachaysana, the start of each new semester of Rehearsing Change is not just another academic cycle kicking in. Each semester is an active decision to choose a different path.

We believe that there are other ways of living, and we choose to act on our belief by fostering the messy, beautiful, difficult work of building intercultural communities.

🤝Do you believe that other ways of living and being are possible? Will you choose to act with your community or with the Pachaysana community?

Becoming the World We Want to Live In - https://mailchi.mp/9de88bd9e74b/from-transaction-to-transformation-unlearning-the-act-of-giving-5856412

We are living in painful and polarized times, where anger is a human response to real harm. At Pachaysana, we believe transformation begins when we listen beneath that anger, stay in relationship across difference, and allow ourselves to be changed as we work for change.

Spring 2025 was filled with joy, learning, and collective creation. From soil to stories, from classrooms to forests, our students and communities showed that laughter is the doorway to serious learning. 💚

We share images from Isabel and Isabelle (Ibby), from American and Wesleyan universities, having laughs in Pintag and Mushullakta.
