IF YOU GROW UP SPEAKING A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE THAN ENGLISH, WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR YOUR KIDS TO LEARN/OR KEEP THAT LANGUAGE?
Moving to a new country is always challenging, especially when it involves culture shock and raising your kids in a different environment. This has been the case for my family, and while it has been great overall, keeping our language has been difficult. Our kids spend so many hours speaking English that it just becomes easier. 😁😁😁
Nevertheless, I feel I have achieved that with my own kids. They are now in high school and are bilingual. I know the benefits this will bring in the future, like having a better understanding of different cultures, better income, more job opportunities, travel, and being able to communicate with more people. 🎈🎈🎈
It is for this reason, for what I experienced firsthand and so many Spanish families that I've met during the years, that I am loving helping them connect with the language they feel are losing with their own kids. Seeing them start opening up to me and getting confident with the language has been extremely rewarding. 🎀🎀🎀
My wish is to keep sharing my language with parents that want their kids to have a second language and with parents that are feeling that their kids are losing their mother tongue so they can communicate with their extended family. 🤝🤝🤝
I'm so stoked today! A former student from China I taught 3 years ago got in touch with me to start lessons again. We had an evaluation yesterday and it was awesome catching up with her and hearing about her horses and competitions.
Teaching online gives you a more personal connection with students and you get to know them and their families better. I really miss my Chinese students from when I was working for a company.
I'm looking forward to teaching her and hopefully some of the others.
It’s a fact of life that sometimes, things don’t go as planned. On those days, it can be hard to stay positive and keep going. But, it’s important to remember that even when things don’t go the way we want, there can still be a silver lining.
Take yesterday, for instance. It started off as a normal day, but then it quickly went south. I got a call from my daughter's school asking me to come and get her because she wasn't feeling well, while I was there with her and assessing the situation I got a message from my son saying that he wasn't feeling well and wanted to go home. I was juggling between trying to make the best decision for them, not exaggerating, going to the hospital and doctors, and at the same time trying to make it to my classes. In the afternoon after getting everyone taken care of, I get to one of my classes and the Zoom meeting had disappeared from my schedule. I couldn't find it but after stressing over it I remembered I had sent someone the link for it. When I was finally able to get in, I was getting ready to open the app with all the presentations for the lesson and there was a glitch that wouldn't work!!! Aaaahhhh, I really wanted to run.
But then something amazing happened. In the middle of all this chaos, I felt I had a great lesson with my students. They were extra engaged and had a great time. They were really showing me how much their confidence had grown just in a month of lessons and how much they wanted to learn and participate. It was a great feeling!
It’s a great reminder that even when things don’t go as planned, there can still be a positive outcome. It’s important to stay positive and keep going, even when things seem tough. You never know what kind of surprises might be waiting around the corner.
Let's keep going...

Happy Wednesday everyone! 😁😁😁
If you are like me, you love learning about different cultures and countries, so today I want to give you an opportunity of asking me anything that you want about my country, Ecuador.
What would you and your child want to know?
SETTING UP A GOAL
Learning a second language can be exciting and fun. It is a new adventure that kids can have the opportunity of experiencing and at the same time turning it to a whole family experience. 👩👦👦👩👦👦
Like I always told the parents of my students in all my years in the classroom, when students see that their parents are excited about what they are learning and they feel that they have a team with the teacher, they get excited too and start achieving great results.
Children who learn a second language often benefit from this parental involvement. This is especially true for parents who are learning a second language themselves. Parents will often overextend themselves by reading materials and watching videos in the new language. This helps them learn the new language much faster and prevents them from making errors. However, sticking to this strategy can be exhausting if you don’t have good guidance and a clear path. 👩👦👦👩👦👦
It's also important not to only rely on free online resources for learning a second language. Many websites offer free video lessons for various languages- but these are often outdated and not well-designed for teaching new phrases or languages. In addition, these lessons rarely include information about culture or social norms that may affect how someone speaks or understands a different language. It also lacks the most important component which is, two-way learning. Without this one, students don’t get the necessary feedback for their pronunciation or encouragement. Consequently, it's best to supplement online resources with classes as well as dedicated tutors for your secondary target language(s).👩👦👦👩👦👦
And most importantly, parents need to have a clear goal of what they want to achieve with their children’s education. Do I want them just to be exposed to some new vocabulary and experience it? Or Do I really want my child to be fluent in this second language so they can get all the benefits that this will bring to their future life? When a parent is clear on what their goal is, it will make the difference between achieving it or waiting until the child is too old to learn without an accent, fluency, and motivation.
Great news!
We have been having fun practicing Spanish during the lessons. It's always rewarding to see that you can apply what you learn 🙂
My student's are doing great!
