2026년 4월 23일, 붉은 사하라와 푸른 지중해를 함께 품은 매력적인 나라 알제리에 첫발을 내디뎠습니다. 부임 첫날, 아름다운 중정(中庭)을 품은 공관 앞마당에서 따뜻한 미소로 맞아준 직원들의 모습을 통해, 제가 이곳에서 해야 할 일이 단지 업무가 아니라 사람과 사람의 마음을 잇는 일임을 깊이 새겼습니다.

한국과 알제리는 각각 아시아와 아프리카 대륙에 자리하여 지리적으로 멀리 떨어져 있지만, 식민 지배의 아픔을 딛고 자주적인 독립과 발전의 길을 걸어온 공통의 역사적 경험 속에서 서로를 깊이 이해할 수 있는 든든한 공감의 토대를 가지고 있습니다. 1990년 수교 이래 양국은 우호 협력 관계를 꾸준히 발전시켜 왔으며, 2006년에는 아프리카 국가 중 유일하게 '전략적 동반자 관계'를 수립하였습니다.

2026년은 그 뜻깊은 결정이 20주년을 맞이하는 해입니다. 급변하는 국제 정세 속에서, 양국 정상의 통찰력 있는 리더십 아래 우리 관계를 한 단계 더 도약시킬 의미 있는 전기를 함께 마련해 가고자 합니다. 유럽과 아프리카, 지중해와 사하라를 잇는 지정학적 요충지인 알제리는 풍부한 자원과 역량 있는 청년 인구, 발전을 향한 강한 의지를 갖춘 나라로서, 대한민국이 지향하는 '국익 중심의 실용 외교'를 실현하는 데 있어 핵심 동반자입니다.

저는 지난 20여 년간 글로벌 기업에서 국제 협력 최일선의 경험을 쌓았고, 이후 공직에 몸담으며 평화와 공존의 가치를 고민해 왔습니다. 이러한 실용적 경험과 철학을 바탕으로, 보다 깊이 있고 호혜적인 협력의 틀을 구축하여 양국의 전략적 동반자 관계를 한층 더 발전시켜 나가는 데 최선을 다하겠습니다.

기존의 건설•제조•인프라 분야 협력을 안정적으로 뒷받침하는 한편, 에너지 안보와 신재생에너지, 미래 전략 산업, 농업•환경•디지털 전환 등 새롭고 미래지향적인 분야로 협력의 지평을 함께 넓혀가겠습니다. 아프리카와 유럽 시장을 동시에 겨냥하는 전략적 거점에서 우리 기업들이 '새로운 알제리(New Algeria)'의 발전 여정에 신뢰받는 동반자로 자리매김할 수 있도록 현장에서 발로 뛰며 지원하겠습니다.

무엇보다 임기 동안 제가 마음에 품은 비전, '서울과 알제가 더 가까워지는 꿈'을 키워가고자 합니다. 알제리 청년들이 K-팝, K-드라마, 한국어를 통해 한국을 만나고 있듯이, 한국 국민도 사하라와 지중해가 빚어낸 알제리의 깊은 역사와 풍부한 문화를 더 가까이 느낄 수 있기를 바랍니다. 이를 위해 알제리의 대학•교육기관과 긴밀히 협력하여 한국어와 한국학 교육의 저변을 넓힘으로써 양국 간 문화적•인적 교류가 확대될 수 있도록 노력하겠습니다.

알제리에 거주하시는 우리 동포 여러분께도 따뜻한 인사를 전합니다. 대사관의 가장 기본적인 책무는 재외국민의 안전과 권익을 지키는 일입니다. 언제든 편안하게 찾으실 수 있는 '열린 공관, 소통하는 공관'이 되도록 정성을 다하겠습니다.

Inaugural Greeting from the Newly Appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Algeria

Assalamu alaikum. To all visitors to the website and social media platforms of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Algeria, I extend my warmest welcome. I am Min Kyung-tae, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria.

On 23 April 2026, I set foot in Algeria, a magnificent land that embraces both the red Sahara and the blue Mediterranean. On my very first day at the Embassy, in the courtyard of our beautiful residence, I was welcomed with warm smiles by the entire staff. In that moment of heartfelt hospitality, I came to a deep realization that my mission here is not merely a matter of duties and documents, but of connecting hearts and minds between our two peoples.

Though Korea and Algeria lie far apart on the continents of Asia and Africa, our two nations share a profound foundation of mutual understanding, forged through the common historical experience of overcoming the pain of colonial rule and walking the path of independence and self-determined development. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1990, our bilateral ties have steadily flourished, culminating in 2006 in the elevation of our relationship to a Strategic Partnership — a distinction Algeria uniquely holds among African nations in its relations with the Republic of Korea.

The year 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of that historic decision. Amid a rapidly transforming international landscape, and under the visionary leadership of our two Presidents, this milestone offers a meaningful opportunity to advance our partnership to new heights together. Algeria — a strategic crossroads linking Europe and Africa, the Mediterranean and the Sahara — is endowed with abundant resources, a vibrant young population, and a strong determination to shape its future. As such, Algeria stands as an essential partner in the Republic of Korea's vision of realizing pragmatic diplomacy centered on national interests.

Drawing on more than two decades of frontline experience in international cooperation within the global private sector, as well as subsequent years in public service devoted to the values of peace and coexistence, I will spare no effort to further elevate our Strategic Partnership by fostering a deeper and more mutually beneficial framework of cooperation.

While firmly consolidating our established collaboration in construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure, I shall work to broaden our horizons into new and forward-looking domains — including energy security and renewable energy, future strategic industries, agriculture, environmental sustainability, and the digital transition. As Algeria serves as a strategic gateway to both African and European markets, the Embassy will stand on the ground, alongside our companies, to ensure they become trusted partners in the journey of the "New Algeria."

Above all, during my tenure I aspire to nurture a vision I cherish — the dream of bringing Seoul and Algiers ever closer to each other. Just as Algerian youth are discovering Korea through K-pop, K-dramas, and the Korean language, I hope that the Korean people too will come to feel more closely the rich history and culture born of the Sahara and the Mediterranean. To this end, I shall work in close collaboration with Algerian universities and educational institutions to broaden the foundation of Korean language and Korean studies education, thereby contributing to the growth of cultural and people-to-people exchanges between Korea and Algeria.

To our fellow Korean nationals residing in Algeria, I extend my heartfelt greetings. The Embassy's most fundamental duty is to safeguard the safety and well-being of our citizens abroad. I pledge to make this Embassy an open and communicative one — a place you may always visit with ease.

To the people of Algeria, I likewise extend a sincere message of friendship. With humility, I shall endeavor to learn the history, culture, and spirit of Algeria, and to work earnestly so that the friendship between our two peoples may grow ever deeper and warmer.

Just as the merchants of the ancient Silk Road traversed barren deserts and rugged mountains to share civilizations across continents, I shall walk a new path of exchange — one that transcends physical distance to connect hearts — together with all of you.
