2026 Correction guide

After reflecting on this year’s BEM English exam and the many discussions surrounding it, I think there are a few important things we can learn from it as teachers and educators.

Firstly, I personally believe the 4MS English curriculum needs a lot of improvement and modernisation. Around the world, many countries now assess EFL (English as a Foreign Language) using more communicative approaches that focus on:

* listening,
* speaking,
* reading,
* writing,
* contextual grammar,
* and practical language use.

In many countries, national English exams are assessed through these four main language skills. This helps students develop real communicative competence rather than relying mainly on memorisation and predictable written patterns.

Meanwhile, the Algerian system still relies heavily on isolated grammar exercises, memorisation, and predictable exam patterns.

At the same time, after revisiting the official exam guide, it is important to acknowledge that the exam itself did comply with the competencies and question types outlined in the guide, even if some activities felt less predictable than previous years.

I think this exam reminded us of the importance of using the official guide throughout the year and exposing students to a wider variety of question types — not only the ones that appeared frequently in previous BEM exams.

When students are trained only for predictability, any small change in the exam can create panic and confusion. Helping learners develop flexibility and real language awareness is just as important as preparing them for the exam itself.

Of course, this is not about blaming teachers at all because we all understand the pressures teachers face daily:

* overloaded programmes,
* limited time,
* mixed ability classrooms,
* and pressure to achieve results.

These discussions are important because they encourage reflection on how we teach, how students learn, and how the curriculum itself can continue to improve for future generations.
