The 64th Anniversary of the Self-Determination Referendum and the Declaration of Independence (July 1962)

Preparations: In accordance with the Evian Accords, the Provisional Executive based in Rocher Noir (now Boumerdès) set July 1, 1962, as the date for the referendum, amid widespread popular mobilization and vigilance from the National Liberation Front (FLN) and Army (ALN).

Results: The vote counting on July 2 revealed an overwhelming majority voting "Yes" for independence (over 5.9 million "Yes" votes against approximately 16,000 "No" votes).

Recognition and Sovereignty: The results were officially announced on July 3, 1962, and French President Charles de Gaulle sent a letter of recognition of independence to Abderrahmane Farès. Consequently, July 5, 1962, was designated as the official date for the restoration of national sovereignty, marking the exact day colonization began in 1830.

The Algerian Muslim Scouts were founded in 1935 by Mohamed Bouras, following the advice of Sheikh Abdelhamid Ben Badis, with the first regiment "Al-Falah" established in Algiers. Many militants joined the movement, including gritli Mokhtar, Benassi Habib, Larbi Ben M'hidi, Hassiba Ben Bouali, Ahmed Ould Tourki, and Mouaz M'hamed. The first scout martyr was Bouzid Saal, who carried the national flag during the demonstrations of May 8, 1945, alongside Saad Eddine Mustafay, Mohamed Abdoun, and Abdelmajid Ouchish. Other prominent leaders included Abdelaziz Mohamed, Hocine Ait Ahmed, Bekhlouf Mohamed, Badji Mokhtar, Mourad Didouche, Boudjemaa Souidani, and Youcef Zighoud. Female scouts who joined the revolution included Youcef Khatib, Fatima Hussein, and Messaouda Baj. The French authorities severely repressed the movement and executed the founder Mohamed Bouras by firing squad on May 27, 1941. The scouts' principles included duty to God and country, self-reliance, courage, and service to others, making it a true school for training future revolutionaries.

Algerian Student's Day (May 19, 1956)

Every year on May 19, the Algerian people commemorate "Student's Day" – a major milestone in the struggle for independence, proving that knowledge and resistance are two sides of the same coin.
After the outbreak of the Algerian War of Independence on November 1, 1954, French colonial authorities tried to portray the revolution as mere chaos caused by outlaws. However, each passing day confirmed that the revolution was born from the heart of the nation, with all the people standing behind it.
Then came May 19, 1956, a day that silenced the colonial propaganda. On that day, Algerian students collectively left their university benches and joined the ranks of the revolution, offering a unique model of sacrifice. This event was a powerful blow to the colonizer, who had mistakenly believed he was raising a "Frenchified generation."
The role of students was not limited to the strike. They provided tangible support: manufacturing explosives, providing first aid and medical care, raising awareness, and offering moral support to both the revolutionaries and the people. They invested their knowledge directly into the liberation struggle.
For this reason, May 19, 1956, remains an eternal symbol of the unity between students and the people – a day of pride for every Algerian who believes that liberation begins in the classroom before the battlefield.
