Afghanistan is in a deep state of crisis, with a broken social contract due to a lack of human rights and freedoms, in particular for women and girls. This think piece looks at how lives have changed since the Taliban returned to power in 2021—20 years after being ousted by US troops—and military forces of the United States and NATO allies abandoned the country, prompting more than one million Afghans to flee. It looks to a burgeoning diaspora initiative, the establishment of an online university for Afghans to address the highly constrained space for education in the country, in particular for women and girls, as a possible source of hope for the future.
