MSc in Lighting Design is a 2-year master’s program at Aalborg University Copenhagen, taught entirely in English. This cross-disciplinary and international program is founded in a special Danish and Nordic tradition of sensibility to light in our built environment. We focus on how the technical qualities of light and materials are applied in order to promote comfort, health and aesthetics. The pur

💫 Lighting Design Lab in Bologna 💫

Last week, the General Assembly of the “Art of Darkness” Project met in Bologna, bringing partners together to exchange insights, share experiences, and engage in meaningful discussions.

This inspiring gathering was followed by two planned night walks, offering an unique opportunity to explore the city through the lens of light and darkness. ✨

How does light shape the way we feel and experience space? 🤔

💫A new research collaboration between ARoS Aarhus Art Museum and Aalborg University explores the sensory and neurophysiological effects of immersive art experiences through the monumental project “As Seen Below – From Within” and focuses on what potential experiences visitors can expect.
The project is led by Stine Louring - anthropologist and PhD in Lighting Design — whose research focuses on light, atmosphere, embodiment, and sensory experience across architecture, health, and art.

Together with neuroscientist and co-investigator Zakaria Djebbara and the research team (currently counting Marta Monrós Rivera and Hyunsung Lee ), the project investigates visitors’ experiences of As Seen Below – The Dome, A Skyspace by James Turrell, opening at ARoS on 19 June 2026.

Co-design Workshop 2 💫

During Week 11, we hosted our second co-design workshop in the open grass area next to Grundtvig’s Church in Copenhagen.

As part of work package 2 of the Art of Darkness Project, the workshop highlighted the value of co-design as a method for inclusive, experience-based knowledge building. Through three hands-on, participatory activities, we explored how residents experience this space after dark. Participants actively engaged with different lighting equipment, testing variations in colour temperature and light distribution, and reflecting on how changing lighting conditions can reshape perceptions of the space in darkness.

A big thank you to all participants for the thoughtful conversations, curiosity, and ideas shared in this inspiring outdoor setting.
